The Cookie Monster Orchard Project
« on: September 05, 2014, 06:41:55 PM »
Whoo hoo! Nothing like a clean slate. I bought the vacant lot next door and trucked in 250 cu yards of delray beach topsoil to raise the lot about a foot with "real" soil (not this alkaline junk that they gave us on my lot).

Planting commences this weekend. 38 trees will fit on that baby!

The neighbor's think we're nuts :-). Fortunately all have been really positive about the project, including the HOA, city, and neighbors. One neighbor told me, "it's better to have ag than another crazy neighbor." :-).

I'll update when the planting finishes!

Jeff  :-)

Wow! Congratulation that look more like a UFO landing pad than an Orchard for now. What are you growing in your fruit park; hope you fence it so people don't mistaken it for a city park or Fruit Ninjas the Bipedal types! Get an air gun you day of peace is over as the bushy tail ninjas will text their buddies.  Very nice neighbors, maybe I should move in next door and enjoy the booming squirrels to come! :D

I hope you are getting an agricultural exemption on the property tax as an added bonus.

A great project!  Your hope your trees will thank you for the top soil with abundant fruit.

Will you do anything to minimize soil erosion until some grass grows in?

Very nice, Jeff. Lots look so much bigger and nicer when they aren't marred by houses!

Think of all the black olive trees you'll be able to fit on there.  ;)

HAHAHA yah, I have my guard dog wife who does a good job of chasing fruit thieves away :-). We're putting in a thick hedge to keep folks out :-).

:-) About 1/2 will be mangoes. Now that I actually have real soil, I'm going to put in stuff that I've wanted to grow for years: mamey sapote, anonas, etc.

Nice property Jeff!  Are all 38 trees going to be mangos?

Yah, that's the idea. But I guess in recent years they've cracked down and made it tougher to prove. I have to actually file taxes on fruit sales in order to get it according to the kind folks over at bcpa :-).

I hope you are getting an agricultural exemption on the property tax as an added bonus.

haha I was just thinking about that last night. I'm going to throw in some grass sprigs and hope they grow in fast enough.
