Tropical Fruit Discussion / experience growing rare species of annona
« on: January 08, 2022, 12:33:24 PM »
Dear gardeners, I have a suggestion to collect as much information as possible based on your personal experience growing rare species of annona. I am interested in your impressions about the taste qualities of fruits (sweetness, aroma, bad aftertaste, presence or absence of fibers), the period from planting seeds and the beginning of fruiting. What information do you have on the following species of annona: A.crassiflora, A.coriacea, A.vepretorum, A.salmaznii, A. sylvatica, A.neolaurifolia, A. stenophylla and others.

I would love to sow or graft and root such an hybrid. Then compare its cold hardyness in my temperate climate spain and france to know the frost limit.
I could also share unique varieties, look the topic I did about my collection.
I'm crazy of cherimoyas, it,s my main food...
Thank you so much for this awesome réalisation

What is favorite varieties (sorts) of Annona cherimoya?
Best regards,
Denis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soursop fruiting in living room.
« on: January 08, 2022, 02:16:31 AM »
This year showed me, how tricky the right time to harvest is. Right now, I collected my one and only fruit from my annona in living room and this time I collected it while still partly hard on touch.
And it was a mistake, pulp is not as tender as ussual, slightly sour and the taste is full of that bleach chlorine odour typical for muricata flowers.
But it looks like taste is improving while I let the harvested fruit rest in room for 24 hours.

Amazing. Is it good taste?
Best regards,
Denis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: COLD HARDY ANNONAS
« on: April 26, 2020, 11:03:04 AM »
Need expert annona advice!
There is very little information available in the US on this subject specifically.. some obscure and anecdotal evidence..
Basically I am looking for annonas that will survive comfortably in a lower 8b/northern 9a climate zone. Where minimum temps usually only dip into the upper or mid-20s, BUT every few years we will see rare, brief,  mid-to-upper teens temps (which pretty much constitutes as a ‘moderately severe’ or ‘hard’ freeze). So once every 3-4 winters it might drop down to 17-20 degrees F.
So, from the information I have gathered so far, I believe these species are hardy for my climate zone:
Annona rugulosa
Annona/rollinia sylvatica
Annona/rollinia emarginata
Annona ubatubensis
“Dream” annona
Annona parviflora
And PERHAPS select individuals from these species:
Annona montana
Annona hayesii
Annona hypoglauca
Annona crassiflora
Perhaps some other types of Cherimoyas and Atemoyas.
And perhaps some types of Duguetias.

I have found that most of these hardier annonas originate from Southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and highland/ mountainous tropical/subtropical forests such as in Peru.

Any additional information would be GREAT! Thank you!
Also seed sources would be AWESOME!

I would be in your list have added Annona neolaurifolia. I tested a seedling of this annona at a temperature of -4 C. The seedling withstood this frost.

How about air layering?

Thanks Har!

Also if you have any seeds for sale I would definitely buy them (don't go out of your way for me though, if it's an inconvenience!).

I have successfully rooted the scions of A. glabra, A. montana, and A. cherimoya.

thank you. Just Dada for a long time does not respond to emails, and so want to quickly get the ordered seeds. In my region the summer will end soon so I ask Dada to send the seeds as soon as possible.

Don't worry sending seeds from Ecuador to Russia is not taking longer than sending to Vietnam. You'll receive the seeds in 2-3 more weeks. I think Dada already sent your seeds.

Thank you dear friend. I really hope that's it. Dada wrote to me that it is raining because of which he can send her seeds. Dada I ask you to send me the seeds as soon as possible, as in my climate in September it becomes cool outside and autumn comes.

I've often purchased from Dada and have received tracking numbers after 2-3 weeks or no tracking at all but all packages have arrived safely so far.
