Heavy mango drop
« on: April 29, 2015, 09:29:59 AM »
We have been experiencing some heavy mango drop this past week. Ivory,NDM,Mallika, Keitt and a few others. Don't know if the rains we have had lately are the cause. Way heavier drop than last year.

I have seen the same in Palm Beach on select varieties.  Pineapple Pleasure, NDM 4, Hatcher, Lemon Zest, and even a few Carrie.  No extra fertilizer, wind, or intentional watering?? Maha Chanok, Fairchild, PPK, Pickering, Edgar, Ivory, and a couple others are holding strong in the same yard??

The Pineapple Pleasure mangoes that have fallen have been baseball size or bigger lately.

I lost three Ugly Betty mangoes and a few baileys marvel. I had a couple of BM split as well.

I wohld think part is from recent storms however this year ghe fruit set is much heavier than last year so comparison may not be truly substantiated.

I have eaten a couple of large LZ drops and they were quite tasty.

Anybody noticing any splitting wifh their LZ?

No splitting with LZ, but heavy drop about 50%.

LZ trees do seem to have a tendency towards excessive fruit drop, but they tend to set enough to make up for the difference.

I would say my fruit retention rates across the board have been pretty good all things considered, even on younger trees.

I have nearly lost all the fruit on my Glenn tree.  Fruits were about size of golf balls.  a lot of NDM have split.  The fruits from the last flush seem to be doing good but im not holding my breath on them staying on the tree and/or not splitting.

Are the trees that are dropping fruits flushing new growth? My NDM, which decided to do a full flush of new growth has dropped a boat load of hand sized fruit. Everything else is holding well though.

My PPK is holding strong so far, although it does not have many fruit, only 21 or 22, has not dropped any so far with all these rains or winds.  Some branches are starting to hang pretty low then and will probably put some sort of supports. Proud of this young tree.

I got a few watery Carrie drops. So watery you would have scarfed them down. I ate them....no problem. But all in all I do not see unusual mango fruit drop after the heavy rain of last night and the day before

Yes, the Glenn has put out a ton of new growth but the NDM no

Never good for a tree holding fruit, especially those holding fruit that is not near maturity.

LZ dropped half after high temps dropped 72 to 67 last week the rest of the seem ok. Powdery mildew is setting in and I forgot to spay. Will this effect the fruits that have set?

My julie seedling also dropped a bunch also but my Glenn and Madame Frances held them all tight. I'm thinking it was the rain. The Julie seedling had waayyyy too many anyway.

I too had a lot of fruit drop this week...lost about 15 baby Mahas (worst one) and several others varieties ( and I already have a very poor set of mangoes due to powdery mildew and late freeze this year)...really looking to be a very poor year for mangoes for me :o(

Had very windy days and 2 days in a row of some heavy rain...had a fairly strong storm moved through here yesterday...I'm sure between the above normal rain for April and very windy conditions didn't help  :'(

Lychee tree seems to be loving the rain though...even though I have seen some drop on those as well, but not nearly as bad as the mangoes.

Rob, why would the Glenn tree flush so much growth when it has fruit on it?  Is it because the tree is still young, about 4 years old?

Could be due to tree's age, could be something triggered it.  Did you apply and type of fertilizer? Approximately how many fruit was it holding?  I have at time seen this from mature trees, if my memory serves me it was usually from a late setting crop.

I applied a little bit of Ironite a few months back.  And isn't Glenn supposed to be an early season mango?  Well, the tree bloomed the latest of all my trees including NDM, Pickering and Cogshall.  It probably had a good 30 small fruits on it

Those with splitting mangoes on their trees, pull them off if possible.

I just went to look at my NDM tree and the newer fruits look different than the old fruits shape wise.  I believe the newer, younger fruits are more slender than the older ones...who knows, maybe these newer, younger fruits will hold and not split

I've been doing that. I pulled off even more that were beginning to split. It seems to be a problem with the smaller, more plump-looking fruits. The larger, more slender ones look perfectly fine (knocks on wood).

Mangos doesn't look good for me this year. Rain every day for weeks with strong winds and squirrel problem. The carrie, Neelam, and julie mango on the east side of the house is still holding on strong.
