We go every year, you never know what varieties of trees they may have that are difficult to find anywhere else, be awesome if we can plan a get together there for the people on this forum, this way we can all meet. hopefully see many of you there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Citrus Tree Smuggling
« on: February 11, 2012, 08:34:24 AM »
There is an article about a South Florida nursery smuggling citrus trees to a handful of states up north.article is in the Sun-sentinel.com,gee whatever happened to good old fashioned dope smuggling??

If we catch a nursery involved in renaming cultivar names or changing tags on a tree to make the sale, etc, this should be reported to the forum.  This will help the Tropical Fruit collection community.  It would help filter out the people doing this and help us fruit collectors.  Maybe making a sticky where an incident/multiple incidents by different confirmed users can be reported?  This would have to be done carefully as abuse can occur.  Maybe only administrators can post to such thread after an incident is confirmed?

Thanks,
Adiel
Agree, I have a handful of trees myself that we have lost either tags or cant be sure of the variety from either age or storms ripping off tags,I would not sell them, in fact we have about a half doz mango trees that we keep for customers looking for a cheap tree that dont really care about the cultivar and are happy to sell those at our cost, we call it our "take your chance lot" you have to be pretty sleazy to just name something to make a couple of bucks.

How about when a nursery changes a tag on a tree just to sell it to you?

Still quite unhappy about that one.

Me " Do you have any Lemon Zest, AKA 27-1 from Zills" ?

Them  " Haven't heard of the one, but I can order it for you if they sell it"

Me " OK, great"

2 wks later ..

Them "We got your tree"

Me " Great, I'll come pick it up today"

So I go pick up the tree.  I am in a rush, so I just load it up and go.  Looks to be nice and healthy.  A few days later when I go to plant it, I notice the pot is marked LM .... Hmmnnn ... And there is a string, like a PI string that usually holds a name tag without a name tag .... Hmmnnnn  .. And it does have a metallic tag with Lemon Zest written on it .. Hmmnnnn

Seems to me like it is a LM and they re-tagged it LZ just to make the sale ... Hell, I would never know right???

So a few months later, I purchased a real LZ from Jeff Hagen.  Totally different than what that other nursery sold me.   Now I really don't mind having both, but I sure can tell you I don't like being lied to, and I will never buy from that nursery again...
How hard up do you have to be to lie about a tree to make $10, I can't believe someone nowadays owning a business would play that game, sad to say the least.

I agree, that is why i have not carried any citrus product,I remeber quite a few nurseries having to dispose of their entire inventory of citrus with the canker fiasco,I hate to lose biz,but I would rather lose biz than customers or have to sell a tree that has no shot at surviveability. i guess I will stick with what we have been doing and focus on that. Thanks for all the imput

We have been wary of carrying any citrus just for the fact of the horror stories some nurseries have gone through, also I don't want to sell customers overpriced trees that have no shot of survival.

Just curious how big a threat folks on this forum believe citrus greening to be in south Florida, from a little of what I have obsereved it seems to be pretty prevelant throughtout Dade and broward county, I keep having customers ask for citrus trees and I have been cautious to carry any just because I think with this Greening it is unwise to invest the money in either trees for a yard or inventory for my nursery. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, Thanks Mike

Hey Jaboticaba lovers, check this out ! These incredible Jaboticabas are grown by my friend George in Parkland FL which is near my home.  He has over 30 Jabos in the ground including 8 or 10 that are over 20 years old. Some years he gets 3 to 4 large crops per year. He sells almost every one to the local Brazilians who go crazy over them! I have never seen more prolific trees than his. He uses lots of mulch and waters a bunch too. Besides the Florida guys, which other forum members have fruited Jabos?

Awesome pics, amazing what some folks can do!

actually the people who had the trees stolen were not all purchased at my nursery, one was the others came by for replacements, one customer just is wary of replacing the tree he lost. As far as cameras, nowadays they walk into banks and rob them and wave at the cameras as they leave!! I will depend on my doggies they do a excellent job and work cheap!! I have looked into surveillance cameras but they are quoting me stupid prices for a set-up,maybe someone on here can give us someone who dosen't want to use me to retire on! that would be a great help!

We have had trees stolen ourselves, months ago, guess part of doing biz,now we have watchdogs that are out when we are closed. They are very good at there jobs!! now if I can only train them to catch all the fruit eating squirrels I have that would be awesome!! they do a heck of a job on raccoons and possums,so they rarely come into our grove anymore!

Don't know the addressess, just know the cities, nowadays they would probably steal the dog too, I hope this isnt some new trend, and hope it is just an isolated incident, just very strange to hear the same problem from 3 different people in that area.

I would assume if they are a yard crew working an area, they case yards by day and come back at night, I am no Sherlock Holmes, but that would make the most sense, one of the people told me he saw a landscape truck and trailer (red trailer) with no markings driving up and down his street the day before he had a carrie mango he just purchased stolen, just sucks cause now he dosent even want to replace the tree fearing it would happen again, cant say I blame him, but you cant let fear rule you either. I would say these fools are no brain surgeons, sooner or later they will hit the wrong place.,problem is who is gonna prosecute these guys when they cant even put real crimminals in jail.

One thing I hate is a thief!! I would assume they may be stealing these to re-sell, but you never know, if it a landscape crew then i assume they are re-selling them, nowadays people will pretty much steal anything they can re-sell,guess a bad economy brings out the best in our fellow citizens!!

Hi everyone, just got a call from a customer that had 3 trees stolen from his yard in Pembroke Pines Fl, this is the third person in the last 3 weeks that has told me the same thing,2-thefts in pembroke pines 1- in miramar, These were all newly purchased trees and whoever is doing this, it is at night and they know what they are doing. One of my customers thinks it it a landscape crew with a red trailer. Just thought I would give all of you a heads up cause these thefts are all fruit trees and very simular in description. Hopefully these lowlifes will get caught eventually or maybe they will visit a yard with a couple of pitbulls!!

I wont sleep tonite thinking of the next one!, at least we can always replant, but its tough watching hard work go to waste!
