Here is my version of a "mini grove" of jabotacaba also here in Central Florida.  I was also counting on the sprinkler spray to provide not only irrigation but wanted to use it for freeze protection.  Maybe I will have to also see if I should try to enclose the area during potential freezes.

Thanks for posting the picture. That looks exactly how mine looked at that size.  all the other pictures I have seen oline all show much larger matue trees.  this helps me be a little more confident with the verification.

I think you guys are right.  It does look like the mamey sapote.  Great!  I love the mameys so it is definitely staying!  I had quite a few trees in containers that I had moved around during the winter to try and protect and the id tags got lost and I couldn't remember what it was.  I am glad it is not a weed that I have been nurturing for the last couple of years.

Does anyone recognize this tree?  Is it a tropical fruit tree.  I don't want to continue growing it if it is not.

Thanks for the input. Looks like grumichama it will be.

Which of the tropical cherries (cotrg, suriman, grumichama) most emulate the taste of the cherris grown up north. I have some limited space in my yard in Brevard Fl, and want to appease my wife with a tree with cherries with the taste that most replicate cherries from the north, but can be grown in 9b climate

Mike how do these compare to green sapote? Would you rate them as good as these or even mamey? Or are they closer to canistel?

I can at least answer part of your question.  I don't know about the green sapote, but the ross sapote taste very, very much like a canistel.

My 'Ross', grafted with wood from Bill Whitman's tree, is spindly in growth habit.  Fruits are small, flattened-rounded, and fall when soft, leaving the entire top portion of the skin hanging in the tree.  Fruits are moist and very flavorful.

This year my ross sapote put out about 10 fruit that stayed on until maturity.  Like above poster related, when they are ripe they fall to the ground leaving the top portion with some skin hanging.  The first one I had was kind of chalky but the second that ripened was awesome! I have several left on the tree getting very close to ripening maturity.  My question is, can the fruit be picked just prior to full ripening and before it falls and will it continue to ripen on the kitchen counter or do they need to stay on the tree until full maturity and let them fall themselves?  Any expertise on this question will be appreciated.

You might try Rockledge Gardens in Rockledge.  They had some fruit punch mango trees a couple of weeks ago when I was there.  I would call first and see what they have in stock.

She said it tasted like apple pie, I couldn't imagine it so I went with what I wanted lol
If I would have been there to taste it then maybe I would have got it. They were very nice and very helpful according to my buddy that went there. Home Depot/Lowes is the only option where I am in Melbourne unless you're paying an arm & leg in a tree store/nursery. I just wanted something different than the normal mangoes I normally eat.

Rock ledge Gardens is more than reasonable compared to Lowes and HD and with many variety's that Lowes and HD can not match and is close to you location!

Thanks Brett...other than the large holes I think it should work? But wish I could find something with smaller holes so the critters can't chew through it...but have the same 'easy to work with' as chicken wire  :)...the ones with smaller holes are very stiff and need pliers and are capable of doing some serious injuries to your hand  :(

Appreciate the picture!

My Maja should ready by late July

here is the tree

You can take your chicken wire and create an inner liner with aluminum screen(used for windows).  Has worked like a champ at my place when the squirrels were still getting their paws thru the chicken wire.

Had my first lemon zest today. Awesome!  It came off the tree as I was attempting to put some caging material arround it to protect it from the squirrels.  I was afraid it would not ripen correctly, but after a few days on the counter it softened and turned color.  That overtone of sweet lemon was great.  I have two left on the tree and hope they ripen longer on the tree as I hope to taste some of the orange overtones described by other posters about tree ripened lemon zests.

Any other ideas?  Does the bumpiness on the fruit distort it beyond recognition?

Has the fruit always been bumpy like that?

The trunk is about 4 inches in Diameter.  This is only the second year it has had fruit and I don't remember what it looked like the first year it fruited.

From the looks of the fruit only, I would say its a seedling.  Can you confirm it is grafted and this is indeed the graft material?

Does not look like any NDM or Okrung I have seen.

I got the tree from either Home Depot or Walmart about six years ago so I would have assumed it was grafted.  I lost the id tag as I was  transporting it and several dozen other trees into my pole barn during likely freeze mornings when they were all in buckets.

Can you please post a close up picture of the graft union.  Its the odd "bumpiness" to the fruit that I have concerns over.

The first 2 pictures are of the unknown mango tree.  I really can't tell where the graft union is.  After the tree gets so big or reaches  a certain maturity, does the graft union become difficult to distinguish?  The third picture is of my 15' Valencia Pride and the fourth picture is of my 16' Kent that I got from PIN about 5 years ago and I can't distinguish the graft union on them either.  On the unknown mango tree I believe I got a couple of fruit off of it a couple of years ago and the only thing I can recall about it was the fruit was fiberless and not tupentine(thank God!).  Would have hated to have used all these growing years to have saved a turpentine mango

That green tape looks too tight/////  Is it? The tape securing the tree to the pole. Looks to me like it has indented the bark in another place previously
Better to use an old rope. Or I have an old electrical cord doing it.

Is this tree grafted? Did you look for a graft line?

You were quite right.  I removed the tape as it is about 13 ft high and no longer needs it.  Also removed the tape from about 3 dozen other trees in the same condition.  Thanks for pointing that out and my trees thank you also!

Hi, I would appreciate any help identifying this mango tree.  It does not resemble any of the other mangos that I have and I am at a loss to ID it.  The fruit is not yet ripe so I am not able to do a taste comparison yet either.

I am really interested in acquiring those trees.  I sent a pm.  Hope to hear from you.
