Seemed firmly attached to the roots but as soon as it touched soil it disappeared and got lost in the rubble.

Any thoughts? Is this a parasite?

Looks like a mushroom that hadn't broken the soil surface yet.
Did it actually move?

Not when I touched it. But it seems like it fell off between taking the picture and putting the phone down and I didnt want to go digging in the soil. 

At first I thought it was a massive Japanese beetle grub 🤮
