Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: salak taste
« on: July 31, 2014, 03:00:12 PM »
In fact my question was not exactly about taste,i should have choose another topic title, but more about the "juicy" side.
In Borneo ,the ones I bought were really dry,but after a short trip to visit Peter in Puerto viejo,I could eat more juicy ones.
By the way ,Peter is a real nice person,I didn´t have much time to spend in Costa rica, but I did enjoy the trip. His finca is full of diff trees, colors smells and animals.
Went to local market before leaving and bought some of their chocolate bars ,a must have, and fruits.
Came back to my place in Panama with couple of seeds and fruit to have a real bad surprise.
My owner took advantage of my absence to ask some brainless guy to fumigate around my house.
She had him spread herbicide all over...
All plants/flowers I had planted are dead dry and obviously he went close by my nurserie :o :( >:(

I have +/- 40 seedlings dead.Hopfully these were local trees I can find again,Luc mex and others were more inside.
I was so P....off.
that's live.... ::)

Salak is not the juiciest fruit but a good salak that is completely ripe should not seem overly dry.
You could come and sample my selections of salak, I have lots of seeds and small plants.  Actually, I'll be in Bocas del Toro tomorrow for three days.
We will harvest salak on Fridays.
Peter

Hello Peter

Thanks for your kind and quick answer.I'm in Panama city until wed,so I might be able to join you on friday.I'll pm you

I had Salaks for the first time in Bintulu,Borneo when I came there in Mai .
I liked the taste but they where really dry.

I did read a couple of topics about these fruits here, but among bali/java/malay etc cultivars are they more "juicy" ones or is it always a very dry fruit ?

The ones I had in Bintulu market were brown,Salacca zalacca I guess.

And by the way, if someone get some very good cultivars , my nursery still have plenty place  8)

My grandfather had always one in pocket.

Hope I will soon have Abiu seedlings  ;)

Well, sorry for english speaking people here, you will have to translate this article.

http://www.ecolopop.info/2013/06/irrigation-solaire-au-goutte-a-goutte-une-technique-gratuite-a-la-portee-de-tous/16559

headlines: a big plastic bottle without bottom top a small one filled with water.Evaporartion in the sun will provide droplets.
for aride/dry small area.
Allright, not very nice to look at I agree. ;)

Hello Mike

I wouldn't mind to gave funds to secure next year fruits/seeds purchase.

As I understood ,the farmer had all these Durians send to local market.Maybe we could organise such a collect for next year
with someone living more or less in farmer's area.Farmer would have his money,we would have enough seeds to provide people in différents locations.

Just an idea

Might be too late for this year but for next year harvest , I would be glad to try to manage having some seeds to plant in Panama;no cyclones there, at least for some décades now, guess it was Martha in 1969,

"Hurricane Martha was the only known tropical cyclone to make landfall in Panama",from wiki

If it can help preventing a bit from extinction.

Got one year to make seed shipment ready  :)

I just started a nursery for my own purpose and don't have cacao seedlings yet.
They are some cacao trees around there, but don't know the variety, will take some picture
when i'm back.

I'll spend most of my time at sea but I guess and hope I will have enough time to go to local markets.
If someone wants me to try and find seeds to send,I could try.
I'm just a newbie regarding plants so don't expect to have an expert in place.

Panama has a postal service, but they don't provide mail delivery to your home.American people mainly use  U.S. based mail forwarding companies,if they live in some developed part of Panama.(costa rican border area/Panama city).

If you do live right in the countryside,as I do , mail is not an option, unless using DHl as they can keep mail and call me
to drive the 70 km to pick the stuff.
I will try to use DHL if I can find one in Borneo, but I guess the best way will be to bring the seeds back in my suitcase.

Unless I find someone in Costa rica willing to act as a receiver and in that case I could share seeds as well. But that
means quite an organisation  8)

Thanks for input Oscar

Will work there on a 6 weeks on/off rotation , so I guess I will have opportunity to find some
nice fruits and seeds.
Just hoping layover will not be too long; for the seeds and myself  ;)
and will put seeds in checked suitcases.

thanks

thanks Luc,
as I don't choose my trip,company does, I don't have choice.

Where do you ask online for such pre-approved permit.
Does it also apply for checked bags or is it only for carry on ones.
I plan to have seeds in my checked luggages.
thanks
