Lara's
« on: November 18, 2016, 07:40:57 PM »
I got referred to Lara's and unfortunately got there 15 minutes before closing time, and the guy didn't know English.  I was very fortunate and was able to get a Green Sapote (Hawaiian) and Custard Apple (San Fernandez), but is anyone familiar with other great varieties they off.  I will be making another trip in 2 weeks.
Thanks

Ross Sapote,  Cepeda Especial Mamey, San Pablo Custard Apple, Akil Especial Mamey, Papa Mamey.

You are best to call ahead and make arrangements to meet with Julian.  He is usually there in the afternoon.

I regret not grabbing a San Pablo while there, but I already had a list and couldn't get to side track.  Ended up with 55 trees packed in my pick up.  I have a Pace Mamey and a Lorita here, but will make room for another I guess.  I was kinda planning on gifting the Lorita to my mom further South anyways.  Thanks Again!

Lorito is much better than Pace.  Keep the Lorito and gift the Pace.  Then pick up the Cepeda and Papa.

I didnt mention or recommend Pantin.  I know you are a fan of Pace but I think its inferior to a handful of others.  The "redder" the better. Lol

We may have run into the same guy. I was too ashamed to try to use my crappy 2 year Spanish. Were there chickens in the background next door? I totally freaked out over the chickens. (I like birds.) ;D
Anyway, I can't help you pick cultivars, because all I could fit it my carryon was one Passiflora edulis plant. (Which is thriving in my greenhouse.) That place is huge, so the man came over on a golf cart and went back to get a couple of plants. I wish I had called in before so we could look around a bit longer. I think they were closing soon. Awesome place though!

I got there 15 minute before closing, raced to Going Bananas, gave them my order, raced to PIN, and back to GB after hours to pick up plant.
Im going back to all of them with more time soon.

My experience at Lara Farms was similar.  I went there with my wife, who speaks Spanish fluently, being from South America.  The old man wouldn't sell us anything, and basically wanted us to just go away, and it was the middle of the day!

Hmm that's odd. I've gone dozens of time and never had a bad experience. Pablo, Julian, and their workers are all friendly chaps. Lara is one of my favorite Homestead destinations.

OK. I guess I'm not big on color. As long as it's not black, I don't care :-).

Yeah, never met a black sapote I liked.

What varieties besides Pace and Pantin have you tried?

Rob, I had the same opinion until I had the Giant Yucatán. Sweet and creamy like  chocolate pudding

From the cultivars available here in FL, just magana, pace, pantin (and green sapote). I've had a few salvadoran cultivars -- mostly seedlings. Pace and Pantin are heaven.

Lara's graft three varieties of Soursops, several Caimitos, several Black-Sapotes....

I have usually dealt with Julian, but I also speak Spanish well when talking about plants.

I think Julian is up to 4 (maybe 5) grafted soursop cultivars now :-). I have Homestead and Miami, wish I had space to plant more.

Julian was unavailable when we went.  I'll definitely call him in advance next time.  I sure would like another soursop/guanabana that bears heavily and is outstanding in flavor and texture.
