Back to the ground you go you wretch!
« on: October 02, 2020, 08:45:34 AM »
Got quite the stir at a Central Texas Facebook gardening forum, many were stumped as to what this was.  One person thought it was a hot dog, that's how much folks know about growing avocados here!

This Reed seed germinated in the fruit.  I decided to have a little fun with some of my wife's nail polish.  Looks like fingers coming out of the ground.  ;D

Been eating Reeds since June. 19 mos. of hang time and still picking.

Had a very nice visit from a great San Diego grower/member and friends, Shane Atwell.  We're standing in front of Reed, Sharwil/Lamb on the left, GEM in the center, Ardith in the back.  Pineapple Pleasure, Orange Sherbet and Juicy Peach cocktail tree on the right.

And yes most trees are bearing.  Here's a branch in June of Lamb Hass.  Did one branch on a grafted Sharwil that's on steroids and loaded.

Beautiful greenhouse and plants.

I would place a nice bench right there where ya'll stand.

Going to coordinate my visit to coincide with ripening mangoes  =)

Thanks!  Have a cushy chair on the other side.

Picked the last of the mangos this morn, a tree ripened yellow Orange Sherbet.

Enjoy that OS! One of the best for sure. A fruity-unicorn this time of year in my parts.

I remember eating a couple OS poolside in Key Largo, whilst others ate their fried food and sandwiches, which are good too. Must've looked like a caveman, slicing them OS up and eating down to the skin, juices flying, but did not care. They are so good, sometimes makes me laugh.

Gotta find a way to get good mangoes year round...

You men are all alike ... you know who you are, but we don't !!!

It would be nice if you identify yourselves, otherwise we will assume you are both tree stalkers  LOL

Funny thread.  The OS was good but a little mushy at the flower end and I didn't store but overnight in the fridge.  The leaves aren't in the greatest shape so that may have something to do with the texture.

When I was a kid growing avo seeds in the glass like that was routine stuff. Funny thing is that most avos in my town are shepard or reed and I'm at the limit of where our avos can be grown.in Australia but still struggle and nearly every avo is Guatemalan with WI and crosses like the Floridian and Hawaiian types  rare.My question is are the best WI crosses comparable to Guatemalans in flavour? They are what should be grown in my area if they were available.

I don't think the WI hybrids come close to the Mex X Guat. or pure Guat.  Catalina and Monroe I got from a Fl. member here were pretty damn good though.  I don't care for one that used to be grown commercially here in S. Texas - Lula.
