Question about Plinia edulis and rivularis
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:52:31 PM »
This is probably for Adam ....do you think it would benefit these 2 to prune them like you do your jaboticabas , opening up the tree so that the sun can reach the trunk and other main braches.

Luc how big is your plinia Rivularis?

About 60 cm now Ed , it looks like it will grow very wide also , different growing pattern than the Cambuca.

I was just trying to keep my answer simple :)

they both fruit near tips of branches...not on the caulis.

so never prune them...like m vexator, m glazioviana, m strigipes, and a few others...m tenella, m floribunda, m nana...and on and on...

take me to the rivularis...drop me in the water...

i have one that barely hung on...almost died from city water OD...now starting to recover.

In glaring contrast, I have another that's a real stud...growing like a champ, but only 8-10 inch tall.

Luc which one is slower at growing plinia Rivularis or eugenia matossi? I've heard matossi is extremely slow grower!

I had 3 Cambuca , One in full sun doing great , another mostly in shade is half the size , the 3 rd was also in shade , dug it up to plant in the new lot and died...
Cambuca was slow in the beginning and really speeded up when put in the ground in full sun with lots of water .
On the rivularis in full sun I put drip irrigation , doing very well .

Ed , yes the mattosii is slow and I am really disappointed this year , I had hundreds of flowers and just a few fruits . I cleared some trees around it to give it more sun and I think that was wrong
I remember now when I collected the fruit the bush was growing in almost full shade . Also the fruits are smaller than last year when it was in a lot more shade .

Luc,

they will flower on medium sized branches, all the way to small branches...but not on the caulis...the main stem of the plant.  If so, it would be a rare occurrence.

sorry luc..
I meant to say they fruit on the caulis, but not on the main trunk, like other species...m cauliflora and m jaboticaba...that fruit down to the soil.

plinia edulis fruits on very small branches.   so don't prune it..same with rivularis.

Yes cambuca is cauliflorous, but doesn't fruit on main trunk, only on branches, both large and small.

With the discussion of these slow growers, I was wondering which Plinias/Myrciarias are most sensitive to city water (high pH, dissolved salts, etc.)?  Here in the desert wastes of Southern California we get so little rain that storing enough rainwater to last very long isn't highly feasible.  We don't even have gutters on our house, if I wanted to try capturing some of our rain.

Adam, can you speak to which species really need rainwater/treated water to make it?

a general rule of thumb, if the species or variety is rare in USA, its probably moderately to highly sensitive.  Although there's always an exception to the rule.

sorry I can't list all the species.

I have a couple plinia rivularis and one of them is growing quite well.  Maybe, six inches tall now.  They like rain water every day and lots or organic matter. I am feeding them some cotton seeds meal.  Jabuticabas and all plinias love this stuff. Cotton seed meal in a feeding store near you....go get it! Excellent stuff! 8)

Very nice looking plants Luc! Not sure about your buds. They look a little different from the new leaf buds that I have seen on cambucas. I haven't seen flower blooms yet. So maybe a possibility for you but I'm not positive.

Flower buds on cambuca don't look like that. They are right on the branch, not on the nodes.
