thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion, and who've given me encouragement!
I would never have asked this question before learning from you, Adam, about the diversity of what I had previously called simply jaboticaba, but are these plantings all one species? Or, have you made some different species selections for this grove?
they are all the Red jabo...it's essentially everbearing, dwarf, and fruits from seed in 3-5 yrs...what more can you ask for? Pound for pound there is no other fruit tree that can compete with the red jabo.
I will most likely plant a few rows of Grimal (later this year? or next?)
and of course some Sabara.
I'm just hesitant to plant my big Grimals in the ground...I want to keep them in pots (in the greenhouse) as long as possible.
Awesome! Did you add some sort of an irrigation system? Good luck!
the location I'm at is unique...it has a hard pan about 2ft down that really slows percolation. So it's almost like having a huge dish underneath my property. Being that I'm on a limited budget, I have not set up irrigation yet, but it would be very easy to do...truth be told, I'm spending about 2 hours hand watering every day (but this is for the stuff in the greenhouses in pots). The plants that are in ground require much less water....and being that I'm in a wet spot, they require even less. I've gone for a solid 2 months (it seems) without providing any substantial irrigation for my in-ground trees.
