Mimusops maxima taste a bit like canistel.
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:24:27 AM »

I ate some Mimusops maxima today and they were quite nice. The taste is a bit like light fluffy canistel but with flesh less is less generous amounts.

A rare species in your area? It looks good from the appearance...

LOOK SIMILIAR TO COMMERSONII TO MEMORY

ya looks exactly like commersonii...

btw, I tasted mimusops caffra the other day, and it's surprisingly has a delayed bitterness that's horrible.
It tasted so nasty I thought my throat would swell shut, but nothing happened to me.

the tree is pretty though.

The two species could be the same thing. There is not a vast amount of flesh and I was mistaken to say they taste a bit like canistel. They taste a lot like canistel.

The accepted name is Mimusops balata, of which Mimusops maxima is a synonym.

Mimusops comersonii is also a synonym of Mimusops balata. So all 3 of these refer to same plant.

MIkeT

I found the fruits of M. commersonii to taste like pineapple and mashed potatoes.

not great, but I'd love to have some if I was starving.  They're probably really good for you or something.

Maybe you have a better variety?  sounds like it to me!

I ate some many years ago. As i recall they tasted like a very poor version of canistel, with a whole lot of seed and very little pulp.

Wasn't someone in NQ referring to this one as 'Stilton cheese fruit'? Does it have a cheesy smell or texture? I'd be interested in hearing more about the tree if you know more....

This tree should have been on my forested land in Dominica, but all had been harvested for their lumber long ago... and no wonder, look at this beautiful heart wood.

From what has been related to me these fruit have a wide distribution across Indian Ocean islands and there is much variation between populations.Whether or not they get lumped or split the trees are similar.I had a few very large ones I should have pictured instead of a couple of standard fruits.I saw in published pics that they can also have quite small fruit.

Fruit trees with good timber quality are on a hiding to nothing.

Manilkara bidentata, yet another synonym for the same plant: Mimusops balata. Turns out though that there are at least 6 varieties of Mimusops balata.

The grower of the Mimusops emailed and told me that this selection has very large fruit and is a thick fleshed type of excellent flavor. This year the drought and high temps ruined them and they could not be used for tourist fruit tasting.Their development was arrested and they went ripe early.Golf ball size is too small and they should be much, much larger.

Did we ever decide what the proper name of these beautiful fruits were?

I would also be interested in some seeds in the future if that is at all possible. I have 3 or 4 species of mimusaps that are small plants and one big spanish cherry. I have only tried the spanish cherry from plants fruiting in landscapes in southeast asia, and thought it was very astringent, but still enjoyable. I am also curious what your opinion of Black Apples and the other native sapotaceae growing in Queensland.
