One idea for you Adam (doesn't apply to your current tree of course): I've read that if you do a special proceedure you can get fruit quite fast on Mamey Sapote.

Sprout the seed, cut the taproot to just where it is comming out of the seed, onto that graft scionwood from a mature mamey of a type you like.  Supposedly the seed will develop a new root and your plant will flower/fruit soon (possibly in as little as 2 years).

Currently I have no live Mameys (I had some, sadly lost them) but I've had them before in 5 gallon pots.  Typically they get horribly root bound and tended not to rocket up much past 6'.  Yours looks a lot happier than mine even when they were in their "prime" (such as it was).

Dan,

I think we are on the same wavelength

if u r describing an inverted root graft, I'm already on it!

thats my plan to keep my mamey tree of choice small.
I posted previously in this thread that I have plans to make one tree like this next year.

the tree I have now is headed down a different path in life!

am I corrrect in assuming you're referring to an inverted root graft?

thanks for posting!!!

Interesting on the inverted root graft. Keep me updated how it goes.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

oh bummer, it's not poly embryonic  then..  It's still awesome. I love to train all my fruiting trees as mutiple leader.. I like the way it looks and limits upward growth.. makes the fruit easier to pick.  Mamey  are actually surprisingly resilient. I've broken the tap root off before by accident but later observed multiple tap roots from the original broken root..  Not to mention green sapote seedlings I fried in the sun ... my bad.... have come back from the lower stem.. I thought for sure they were done.

A saffron,  what are your winters like in Orlando?

Yes, I've never done any grafting but the idea of doing the inverted root graft on mamey sapote has always captivated me.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

TabbyD,

I tried some green sapotes grafted inverted on green sapote.  they all failed because I didn't graft them right.

I defoliated the scions  :'(

now I've got a few IRG'd Ross sapotes, on Canistel...scions not defoliated....looking good so far.

I remember cookiemon said he had success with an IRG green sap...but I never heard of that tree again.

I've read  and heard a lot of people say when it comes to pouteria it's good to bind the scion for a few days before removing it from the mother tree so as to get it to store nutrients. I've heard others say with some members of the sapote family that the excess sap should be bled from the plant before grafting.. sounds like a lot of work to me! I'm a novice at grafting, I've had limited success  earlier this year with citrus and white sapote.. which is a psyched about..in the future i hope to do avocados and cherimoya/annona  I've already started a lot of cherimoya seedlings as rootstock!  Please keep us updated on your  mamey grafting endeavors.

here is an upclose shot of the trunk.

maybe you can see where the main leading shoot hooked around, and left a loop in the trunk.

the leading shoot is actually the shortest branch of all 4 shoots!! LOL.

I've not sprouted another mamey that has done this...but I have had miracle fruits (same family) do this!

I had a miracle fruit sprout like the weirdest thing u ever saw....with many shoots coming out everywhere!!

Hi Adam,

Just a quick detour from the topic... I thought about one of my funny-growing pitangatuba when I saw your picture of that mamey trunk. Looks like this:

Tomas...I wonder what made yours do that? it is strange!

i uploaded the same pic, and showed with an arrow which shoot curved around and what path it took.

can u see what I mean?  I traced the path with a thin red line, and a white dot indicating it's origin. (i think u must click twice on the image to see the thin red line..sorry)

Yes, I see the red path you draw. Very odd.

Hi Adam,

Nice job on the Mamey.  Those are very cold sensitive trees.  I have heard that one guy got a Mamey to fruit in Sarasota area, and it was the Viejo cultivar.  I spoke with Noris Ledesma of Fairchild, and she said that in her opinion, Viejo is no less cold sensitive than the other varieties.

It'd be really cool if you could get it to fruit!!!
