The G. parvifolia i know are apple shaped while this one looks almost like a pear. Also, the inside looks very different.

No, not the slightest resemblance. Exept for both being Garcinia.

Hi,
can you please id this Garcinia from a Borneo forest?

Pretty much all of the Borneo mango species have this diesel or oil smell, some like M. pajang or M. foetida much more so than Kasturi. But the locals like them anyways. I prefer M. indica😄

I ate it fresh. Not much taste, really. But the fruit is beautiful, you can use the flesh to colour smoothies and since it seems to be very healthy why not eat it fresh?

You can graft a male branch on a female tree.
Or maybe there are already dioecious cultivars.

Never seen a greenhouse Garcinia. Which ones do you recomment?

I started a playlist of edible greenhouse fruit here in zone 8

Hope that helps

No, i did not take any seeds from Borneo. But next year im planning to collect seeds for Botanic Gardens and might maybe have some for private growers, too.

I am sure you mean kasturi mango. Recently mango entusiasts from di imfferent continents are trying to preserve this Borneo species which seems to be extinct in the wild. It is not really endangered because it is commonly culitivated in S Kalimantan and beyond where people view it as an important part of their cultural identity and as their most typical fruit ever.

With some luck you can find it in fruit forests in the area

Im not aware of cultivars but here are two similar species from the area:

True, good sweet S. affinis was really tasty. But most affinis fruit they sell are horribly sour😖Fortunately they usually warn you. Found it mostly on small jungle farms or in the jungle in Borneo.

88
Yes, you are right. I forgot about Thailand. I was refering to Malaysia/Indonesia where S. zalacca is the only cultivated species im aware of

Well, it sure is different from the oxyleanus i know from Borneo. But is mansonii not supposed to have very thin spines, almost like needles?

Alsi, im not 100% sure its not D. oxyleanus. Looks a lot like it exept for this pinkish colour between the spines.

And where exactly can i find it?

94
Most salak you get anywhere will be Salacca zalacca with a wide range of flavours. To get any other sp you usually need to get to the small native markets in Borneo or other remote areas.

Yes, there are lots of Sterculia species in Asia. Very confusing. But not hardy enough for Romania.

We also have dung beetles in Europe. But they are mostly small and live in the forests. When there is no dung they roll balls made of mushrooms.

In honour of Sterculius you could plant Sterculia = Java olive

Very ornamental tropical nutlets with an unique taste.

Yes, most people around here do not harvest the late figs. Many do not even know they are edible, even the good ones.

Here in Germany the first summer crop is bigger and tastes better. Then, starting in October there is a second crop. By end November the new fruit are of inferior quality, just like those early fruit i discovered.

Hard to say. Could have been a Pfälzer Fruchtfeige, Bananenfeige or Brown turkey. Fruit were not too well developed or sweet. Both trees with fruit grow at a south facing wall. All other trees i checked have either only big unripe fruit or a few "ripe" but abortive fruit.
