Title: Is Pirie and white Pirie 2 different mangoes?
Post by: Jessg333 on February 15, 2018, 04:43:06 AM
Is Pirie and white Pirie 2 different mangoes? If so how do they differ? And has anyone heard of yello or gold pirie? In China town the other day one of the venders was selling mangoes in a box listed as pirie. There were two different different types of mango in the box and when I asked what is the difference she claimed  the larger mango was white pirie while the smaller one was yellow/gold pirie and was sweeter and better in taste.

In Florida, it is thought that Pirie (or Pairi, or Paheri) is the same cultivar as the Jamaican ‘Bombay’ Mango. It is definitely different from ‘White Piri’, which was presumably derived from Piri in Hawaii.

White Piri is larger, lacks a beak, and has more of a pastel coloring. It’s also superior to Piri in flavor in my opinion: sweeter/higher brix, more complex. It’s become one of my favorites. The tree is also less vigorous than Piri/Bombay.

Pirie and White Pirie are different cultivars.  White pirie is larger in fruit size and is a "creamier" version.  Most Hawaiians prefer White Pirie, although both are definitely good tasting (piney) mangos.  Can't really comment at all on yellow/gold pirie as not much is known by anybody on this, as far as I can tell (there is a post on yellow pirie).
The pirie tree is larger than the white pirie tree.  And the production is greater on pirie.

I'm more curious...where are these mangos coming from?  They are not commercial cultivars and it seems too early for mangos in Hawaii.

White Pirie and Bombay I love ,both have a honey richness. The only draw back is Bombay does not always bloom well and have to trim well to keep growth in check. But good market for bombay

Yes, Bombay doesn’t like to bloom completely here and ends up growing too much. I would think it’s a good Mango for California, if they control the powdery mildew.

Just for fun: Trini(dad) claims this one...too.

It’s probably from India anyways.

Aaaah.  I was under the impression that they were related. Good to know they are not. I guess the vendor was making up the yellow/gold pirie to sell it. Our China town sell only 3 types of mango Pirie, Haden, and “local mango” which means any/all other mangoes. Often times they falsely label mangoes pirie which is frustrating.

Wslau, they are all locally sourced but not sure from which island. It definitely is way to early in the season, but my friends Haden and my moms white pirie both have super small early crop of about 10-20 mangoes that are presently ripening while the rest of the tree is in full bloom. Not sure why this happens. I have seen this happen with my moms white pirie before but not haden. I just had one of each the other day and They were both pretty good.

To clarify...Pirie and White Pirie are most likely related.  However, I have never seen this in writing.
Pirie is an old time variety and was brought to Hawaii first (S.M. Damon 1899).  I think it's safe to assume that white pirie was a seedling of pirie (and/or some cross-pollination with another variety)...hence why the "white" was added before its name.  You can always ask the University of Hawaii (Manoa)...pretty sure their Ag department can confirm.

Here is a nice article that talks about mangos in Hawaii (like Pirie), but still no info on the origin of White Pirie.

i dont think this is true. white pirie are less commonly found than pirie, and pirie's sell for the highest amount of $ of any mango I have seen before on Oahu, selling for around $7/lb in chinatown. white pirie's are even more rare to find, on other islands too
