Cherimoya : 12 side shoots from scaffold branch
« on: April 20, 2019, 03:34:28 PM »
Hi all. I have a cherimoya tree that i planted last year.I pruned it last year so that it formed 3 scaffold branches (the Y branch you see in front of the tree was used to train the branches in different directions)

2 weeks ago, when the tree defoliated, i pruned it, and now each branch is producing between 8 and 12 side shoots.

I have two questions :
What it is the maximum secondary branches i can keep for each scaffold branch?
If i have to remove some shoots (which is likely the case), when it is best to do it? remove some buds right now to avoid wasting energy or should i wait to see which branches are vigorous in order to keep the most vigorous ones?

On my 12" scaffolds, I keep top 2 buds.
Rub 1 or 2 off.
Keep next 2.
Rub the rest off.
Branch ends up with 2 leaders and 2 laterals.

My friend kept all buds on his tree last year.
Ended up crowded, with weak and strong laterals.

If you want you can rub off now.

Thank you for the pictures.
Unrelated question regarding your tree: Does the second pic show a Summer pruning after manually defoliating the leaves? Because it seems the branch is not Woody and was not dormant when pruned. I hope mine too will allow me a second pruning round for a faster shaping of the tree.

I pruned that small tree in Feb so I can prune again in late June or early July.
That was 7 weeks ago.

On another small tree I pruned mid June last year.
New shoots were 3' long by December.
I liked the the length and thickness of those shoots.

I would prune late April if I aim for good fruit growth.
The flowers need over night temperature of 17C or 63F to get good fruit growth.
Fruits from early flowers from trees I pruned April 1st last year looked ugly.
The late fruits looked pretty.
