Tropical Fruit Discussion / Visit to Sleman, Java
« on: July 06, 2016, 02:00:53 PM »
I persuaded by wife to let me make some brief detours for fruit exploration on our recent trip to Indonesia.  We stopped at some salak stalls in Sleman on the way to Borobudur (on the main road).  They had 3 varieties available* -- pondoh super, gading, and madu.  For some reason, I mistakenly thought I already had madu (but it was miri -- DAMN!) so I did not try that one.  I got 1/2 kg each of pondoh super and gading -- that set me back 23,000 idr (or about $1.75!).  I didn't catch the price of the pondoh super but the gading went for 25,000 / kg.
*From my research, it appeared that there should be at least 16 varieties of salak in the area, with 5 of those being various varieties of pondoh.

My recollection is that the pondoh super was sweet and the skin was dark colored and it had a pointed top.  It was a bit smaller than the gading.  The gading (means "ivory") was sweet with some sour aspect and a little astringent.  The fruits were large and had a light tan or "ivory" color; they also had a blunt top.  The gading was good but would have seemed better if we had not tried the pondoh super first.  The pondoh super fruit all yielded 3 seeds (although one had two normal seeds & 1 small seed) for a total of 26 seeds from 1/2 kg (& the one we sampled).  The gading had a few with 3 seeds but most had two seeds (1 only had one seed) for 17 seeds total from the 1/2 kg (& the one we sampled).

We had the same driver booked when leaving Borobudur.  He mentioned we could stop at one of the salak farms on the way for sightseeing up by Mt. Merapi.  For this trip, we left the main road from Borobudur to Jogja and took a smaller road up towards the mountain.  We passed many farms with farm stands out front but I assumed he was taking us to a special farm.  Finally after passing one that appeared to have quite a variety of salak.  I told him to stop at the next stand.  There were no more -- I am kicking myself that I did not insist we turn around & go back.  I was not too upset at the time since I was also planning on visiting salak country in Bali & the Balinese salak are monoecious rather than dioececious like their Javan cousins.  I will post on that misadventure later.

I was very disappointed by fruit stalls I visited at market -- none seemed to have anything we do not have in HI -- I guess it was the wrong season or I needed to try a market in a smaller town.

I have attached a few pics from the trip below:
- the salak stalls along the main Jogja-Borobudur road (those baskets all have salak in them)
- a comparison of pondoh super (L) & gading (R)
- a salak being peeled by my wife (for those unfamiliar with "snake fruit")
- a pic of a whole salak, one partially peeled, and a seed -- all of pondoh super

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit ID - Cerbera manghas
« on: July 06, 2016, 12:42:32 AM »
I came across some fruit at the Taman Ujung water palace in Seraya, Bali.  I was not sure if collecting seeds would be allowed (& I also suspect it is not an edible species) so I did not try.  I am guessing that this is probably in the Apocynaceae but not sure.  If anyone has any idea of what it might be, I would appreciate your input.  I have attached a pic of the flowers, of green fruits, and of ripe (over-ripe?) fruits.

I just found a neat resource that will allow you to input info & figure out what Artocarpus species you may be looking at.  Located here:

An interesting read, seems related to Kostermans' report, listed here previously.

Just looked through this -- most of the pertinent info appears to be missing from the download.  Maybe the entire text is available from somewhere?

An interesting read involving some elusive mangifera species:

Interesting that Kosterman refers to these other Mangifera sp as "mangoes".

Tropical Fruit Online Library / Wani "mango"
« on: June 03, 2016, 03:27:20 PM »
I was doing some research on wani (Mangifera caesia variety).  Most western references act like wani is one clone of M. caesia.  According to Indonesian references, it sounds like there are at least 22 different clones of wani with very different characteristics.  Not sure which is the one responsible for all the wani "craze" we hear about or if the whole thing is just hype.  The focus of the paper is a seedless clone.  Below is a link to the translated paper:

https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=id&u=http://www.agrohort.ipb.ac.id/downloads/Prosiding%2520Hibah%2520Insentif%25202007%2520(Purnabakti%2520Prof.%2520Jajah%2520Koswara)/Rai%2520et%2520al.pdf&prev=search

By the way, I put "mango" in quotes in the title to help those unfamiliar, not looking to start the whole Mangifera/mango war over again...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia cereja
« on: April 29, 2016, 02:46:34 PM »
I'm looking for some feedback on this -- how large are the fruits of E. cereja?  My recollection is about 1" but I cannot seem to find it documented anywhere.  Do these fruits tend to be bird magnets or are they large enough not to be extremely attractive to birds?  I'm trying to figure out where to plant these -- don't want them too close to the house if attractive to birds.

Thanks,
John

Citrus General Discussion / Calamansi / calomondin
« on: April 28, 2016, 04:08:02 PM »
I am about to plant out some calamansi and was reviewing some references I downloaded from the web.  According to Wikipedia (a notoriously unreliable site), average lifespan of the trees is only 5 yrs.  Can anyone confirm or refute this?  If true, not sure I want to bother putting much in & definitely don't want to try using them for rootstock for grafting onto.

Thanks,
John

Citrus General Discussion / Rootstock question
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:19:37 PM »
I have a bunch of large calamansi (calomondin) seedlings.  I am not going to plant them all out.  Does anyone know how well they might work as rootstock for a Kishu mandarin?  I have heard that rootstocks can affect the flavor of s scion's fruit, just wondering if anyone has any similar experience & can comment on this. I'm guessing that the tree might grow a little bigger than a Kishu and I may have to watch the rootstock for throwing growths more vigorous than the scion.

Thanks for any help,
John

I don't know if it is just me but the Google search option for this site seems to be gone now.  I recall that was MUCH more efficient for searches of this site.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Santol, again
« on: April 15, 2016, 11:14:46 PM »
I know that there are red & yellow varieties of santol, determined by leaf color before dropping.  Is there any difference in immature leaf color?  I have santol seedlings from two different sources & both have red new growth (although one strain seems redder than the other).  Do both red & yellow santol have red new foliage or is this an indication that I have the red variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Durio macrantha
« on: April 06, 2016, 02:18:44 PM »
Just wondering, has anyone tried grafting D. macrantha onto D. zibethinus rootstock?  It seems it should take.  I tried one yesterday, hoping I haven't made a mistake in trying it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona season
« on: March 21, 2016, 10:47:33 PM »
I suspect that this info is here somewhere but I have had no luck turning it up in a search.  Can someone please give me an idea of the order of ripening of various Annonas in FL?  (Not looking for specific clone info but, in general, what order do the seasons come -- cherimoya, atemoya, custard apple, ilama, sweet sop, etc)

Thanks,
John

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maintaining compact mangoes
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:32:58 PM »
I put in my mangoes a couple of months ago & selected varieties based upon reviews for good flavor & good resistance to anthracnose.  I did not purposely select compact  cultivars but since I am starting to feel a space crunch, I am planning on trying to maintain them as compact trees (~12' x 12') with 25' spacing.  The clones I selected (from what I could find locally) are: Fairchild, Florigon, Keitt, NMD, & Rapoza (not sure what variant of NMD we have here).  From a previous thread ( http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=17443.0;nowap ) it sounds like 4 of the 5 should take to being trained as compact.  However Keitt is not listed there -- should I expect a challenge keeping that tree compact?

I have also thrown in a few Mangifera sp to better insure getting a crop in our Hilo area moisture: kasturi, lalijiwa, kemanga, quadrifida, and a couple of odorata.  Anyone have any experience trying to train these others into compact trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Byrsonima verbacifolia
« on: February 23, 2016, 06:09:11 PM »
I was wondering if anyone can comment on murici (Byrsonima verbacifolia)?  Reports on its relative nance (B. crassiflora) generally do not seem to be glowing and I am wondering if this is a similar or (hopefully) a better fruit.

I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem.  I have not able to access any posting on this forum either using the google search option from this forum or a "stand alone" google search that tries to access our postings.  I get error messages either way.  Any one else run into this?
