tasting psidium longipetiolatum for the first time!
« on: March 12, 2018, 07:24:32 PM »
First of all: thanks Miguel for the seeds!

This is a new species that I had the pleasure of tasting today, it was cultivated from seeds for 3 years and gave its first fruits when the tree reached a meter and 30 cm high during this summer.

You can see in that photo two fruits on the right on top of a leaf and to compare I place two red strawberry guava fruits on the left. The flavor is different to this one, being more lemony and stronger. I would say that it is both more acidic and sweeter: deeper. The skin tastes like lemon guava and I enjoy eating it more than most of the skin fruits I know.

Other notable differences are: the pulp of the arazá serrano is yellowish while that of strawberry guava is white, the consistency of serrano is harder and less damaged when falling to the ground, perhaps less perishable but I doubt it. It is a taller tree that supports up to -7 or -8 º C, more rare and it should be growed to save it from extinction.

The fruit doesnt gives to the touch and I think it is ripe, so it really seems harder than the strawberry guava and maybe less perisheable.

Better photos from today:

Hello my friend. Yes, this one is much less perisheable. And the flavour is very good. I like to eat them when they fall from the tree or they fall on my hand when they are very red.

no sign of damage?

Yes for shure! It's hardy like feijoa. On maximum it will loose the leaves but they will grow fast on spring and give a lot of fruits.

When Miguel-pt published about it some years ago, I got the idea that it was like just another red strawberry guava or so, he wrote that the taste was similar or maybe better. I love strawberry guava and I would say the same as Miguel (for most people, maybe the taste is in the same level), but now I like it more and it has greater comercial potential as the fruit is not so perisheable. All the arazá serrano fruits that I tasted were very good, but not all the strawberry guava tasted that good.
