Feeling wonderful to celebrate Lunar New Year with family with home-grown fruits and flower. Not many fruits, but made my whole family feel special!!! Happy New Year!!!
Here is how I water my plants inside the greenhouse when it rain. Trying to create an environment similar to outside. When it rains outside, it also rains inside.
Hopefully, it wont give too much trouble for the wood frame.
I purchased a 7 gallon Soursop from TT last year. It has grew a lot since last purchase. Earlier this year, it has one flower, but didn't set fruit. I put it down in ground inside my greenhouse last month, and now there are many flowers. Two of the flowers already opened the petals fell off. I don't expect these two flowers to set fruit because there was no other flower to pollinate.
My question is, does soursop need hand pollination in order to set fruit? I see many ants around the flower. Also, can the pollen be collected and kept in refrigerator to pollinate other flower later on?
Fruit for the first time. Hopefully they will make it Geffner Atemoya (Bought from PI last year) Grafted Sourshop bought from TopTropical last year. One flower, but didn't make it. 2 years old Cherimoya seeding, grow so fast 2 years old quava seeding, fruit for the first time. Brewer Lychee, it grew alot for the last 3 years, but NEVER flower. DON'T know why! First time fruiting, So excited! Second time fruiting, but they all split.
It is mid October, and weather is getting cold here in Virginia. Last year winter was brutal and it some of my plants couldn't survive. Just finished insulating the north wall and roof with 2" foam board. Hopefully that will help reducing energy bill. A 10KW electric heater and automatic watering system also added. I am ready for you winter!!! Hopefully!!!!LOL
It has been raining since last night. Today, I found out that 4 of my 8 NDM fruit split. I believe it must be the rain that caused the splitting. Any other suggestion?
I am taking my daughter and wife to Disney World for a few days in June (June 27 to June 30). I wonder if there is any nursery around Orlando area that sells fresh tropical fruit. I want to shows my family around and experience how a fresh fruit tastes like. I appreciate all suggestion.
Hi, I have a 8x24 Greenhouse covered by 6mm twin wall polycarbonate. I wonder if anyone in here having a similar size greenhouse and using a 5 KWH electric heater to keep the greenhouse warm during winter. I am planning to buy this King 5 KWH electric heater (King KBP2406 5700-Watt), http://www.amazon.com/King-KBP2406-5700-Watt-240-Volt-Single/dp/B000PSFRTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389974211&sr=8-1&keywords=king+kbp2406. After using a portable propane heater for two months and many trips to refill my three 20lb tanks, I realized that it is expensive and inconvenience considering the cost of $20 per 20lb (or about $4.24/gallon), and refilled at least twice per month (3 20lb tanks), and waking up in middle of cold night to exchange tank to keep the heater running. I am thinking about getting a 100lb Tank to make it more convenient, but at the rate of $4.24/gallon of propane vs. 10 cent per kw of electricity, electric heater will be less expensive for me. My intention is to keep my greenhouse at around 60F during cold winter. Living in Fairfax, Virginia, it might be a challenge because we get many nights with temperature between 10F and 20F, but low average is about 28F. Please let me know what you think.
I appreciate all input. Thank you so much!!!! Tuan
This is my friend Guava right here in Fairfax, VA. He plants it in ground in his greenhouse. Over thousand fruits. Many had picked already, but still have a lot of fruit.
Hi, My name is Tuan. This is my first post on this forum. I live in Fairfax, Virginia. It's too cold for tropical fruit here. However, my addiction to tropical fruit plants only grow ever since I knew about it. Unlike in Florida, our option to successfully grow a tropical fruit plant is very limited. Most of my plants are in pots. Thanks to Al soil mix, they have been doing great within the last two years. I have a Carrie mango that is planting in 25 Gallons pot right now. It's growing so big that I believe the container is no longer good for it. My question is should I upgrade the container to 40 gallons size or plant it in my greenhouse (8x24 greenhouse, the height is 8 ft). I have a Papaya planting in my greenhouse, it is growing so well, and fruiting right now. It makes me believe that it might be better to plant my mango in the ground in greenhouse instead of in pot for a purpose of healthier plant and producing more fruit. I have never plant a mango in greenhouse before. Therefore, I really appreciate any advice.
