Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help Identifying again
« on: May 11, 2014, 07:01:36 PM »
I hope that all my requests are a bit entertaining and not annoying! I got this at a tropical fruit farm and the owner didn't know what it was either. It has a velvety skin, the inside is blood red and has a bitter cherrylike taste.

Thanks guys!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is Ume (japanese apricot) edible ripe?
« on: March 24, 2014, 01:36:39 AM »
Saw these babies at the market, I'm pretty sure they are Ume (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyone know if they are edible ripe? I'm sure they probably taste bad, but I'm curious if eating the flesh is dangerous.

« on: March 07, 2014, 09:39:51 PM »
I have 10 more days in Kuala Lumpur before I head off to HK. Any recommendations on fruit to look out for or good markets/farms/fun things to do in the HK area? This trip has been amazing, I must have had at least 30 new fruits!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help identify these fruits I found in Laos
« on: November 29, 2013, 08:35:50 PM »
I came across this one, it looks like some kind of plum, and doesnt have much flavor, tastes a bit like a granny smith apple or a sweeter ambarella fruit.

This one looks a little like a pear but had a little protrusion on the bottom. All the ones I saw seemed like they weren't fresh, they were sticky and bruised. So I didnt buy/try any... but might take the risk if its something rare or interesting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coming to Florida, where should I go?
« on: October 02, 2013, 11:14:02 PM »
I should be coming into Miami next week for work and will have a day or two to explore. I really would love to get my hands on some new fruits to try. Any suggestions on places to go?
Also will be in the Orlando area for about a week in November, but I'm guessing I will have a lot more luck in Miami :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Did I ID this correctly?
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:57:34 PM »
I found this fruit while in Malaysia and made a video of me eating it. Looking online, I found a picture matching it listed as a Santol, but more often I see a larger orange fruit listed. So am I wrong? Is this a different variety of Santol, or another fruit entirely?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit in Laos, Malaysia and Hong Kong
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:51:06 PM »
Hey everyone,

Well this fruit hunter is going to SE Asia for about 4 months  (Dec-April) anyone have any advice on places to go or rare fruits to track down. I went to Malaysia last year and had about 20 fruits I never had before. I'm looking forward to tracking down even more, especially in Laos and Hong Kong since I've never been before.

Recipes / Vegan Eggfruit Nog
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:37:49 PM »
I made some eggfruit nog the other day, by using an eggfruit in place of actual eggs. The yolky taste of the fruit makes a surprisingly close substitute and its vegan if you're into that sort of thing. Here's what I put:

1 egg fruit
1 1/4 c soymilk (sweetened, otherwise add sugar to taste)
1/4 t nutmeg
1/2 t cinnamon
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla extract

Blend until smooth, add more soy milk if too thick. I didn't have any on hand, but if you throw in some bourbon I think it would taste even more like the real thing.
