sugar apple cut down. chances it comes back?
« on: June 15, 2019, 09:27:53 PM »
one of my sugar apples got weedwacked (not by me) an inch or 2 above the ground.  is there any hope it will come back?  it is about 2 years old.  like pencil sized diameter.

I lost a biriba to this problem... it came back but ultimately died.  I think in the first regrowth stage they will be as sensitive as they used to be when they were saplings.  Once sugar apples have enough leaves they are quite hardy.

Had the same thing happen depends on how bad it is. What I did was basically turn the entire tree into an air graft. I scraped back the bark a bit to expose the cambium. Then I rubbed rooting hormone into it, then piled up dirt an inch above the cut.

That was last year and it now looks quite healthy.

That, or you could bridge graft across the damage.
