Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing rare artocarpus?
« on: March 06, 2024, 03:35:45 AM »
Our Pedalai is growing huge here in Darwin. First fruit at about 6 years in the ground. Same as jack fruit it had male flowers the first year it flowered. Male flowers have a very strong scent. Great looking tree but our hot easterly winds smash the large leaves in the dry season.

My seeds turned up in excellent condition as always Maryoto. Thank you very much.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangosteen advice
« on: August 03, 2020, 06:41:41 PM »
Gday Mate,
We get ours in the ground as soon as possible. Some 30 or 50% shade cloth is needed until they get head height. Plant them where they get protection from afternoon sun and the strong dry season winds. Get them in the ground early so the tap root has a chance to do what it wants to do and not curled around the bottom if a pot.

My top 5 fruit would be as follows,
Durian, Durian, Durian, Durian and mangosteen.

Can anyone id this mango? There are no ripe fruit on the tree yet so i am not sure of ripe fruit colour. Strange looking raised up nipple where the stork joins the fruit.

Cheers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: To Mulch or Not to Mulch (Fruit Trees)
« on: April 16, 2019, 06:48:36 PM »
The only issue i have had with mulching is once you start its hard to stop. The tree roots grow up into the mulch and when the mulch is gone the roots are exposed. Black sapote trees that we have here suffered from this badly.

PM sent.
Cheers.

Gday Maryoto.
My Mesta seeds have arrived and all in great condition. Seeds are large size which is great. Do Mesta fruit have larger seeds than purple mangosteen? I am very very happy with your efforts to find these seeds for me. Excellent work. Well done.

The temp here rarely gets below 17degrees C. Days are mostly around 32 to 37 degrees C. Its the dry hot mongrel wind we get at this time of the year that tends to knock a lot of the trees etc around. Our Mangosteens do it tough this time of year, we put extra water on them to get them through. We planted some mangosteen trees under black sapote trees because the sapotes grow quickly and produce good shade, this was a mistake because the sapote root system is so much stronger than the mangosteen root system, the mangosteen struggles to get enough water. Nutrients aren't a problem as we feed the mangosteens through their leaves. We are now using banana plants for the shade for our mangosteen trees.

Gday Thera,

My wife took the 1st pic when I was at work so I cant be 100% sure but there are only 2 fruit on the tree. She told me it was the same fruit that she took the pic of. They both look pretty much the same to me.

As for taste I don't know as yet as these are the 1st fruit to come from the 2 trees that we have. My brother has another one of the trees at his place which apparently has fruit on it as well that are smooth skin. I will be heading out to his place in the next week or so and will grab some pics when I am there. Will see about some PM pics as well if there are fruit on his trees.

Cheers
GP.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: mangosteen germination
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:12:36 AM »
I am no expert on this but we get well over 90% germination by leaving the seeds in a plastic bag to germinate them plant them out into pots.

Peter the mould is normally only an issue when the seeds are in postage / transit. If they are not cleaned correctly the seeds turn into a ball of mould after being 2 or 3 weeks in a damp dark environment.

The fellow that put me on to the bleach method had some chlorate in the past but has  not been able to source it any more because it is used to make explosives. I cant remember the leaves dropping after i applied the bleach so i might not have put enough on??
Is there any chemical method to get hass avo's to flower in a region that doesnt get cool enough for them to flower?
