Tropical Fruit Discussion / Panama Red passion fruit question here.
« on: November 11, 2020, 08:07:17 PM »
Planted early this year, it's now a monster to where I'm pruning it. It's also been flowering like crazy, why is it not producing fruit? Is it not self fertile? There's a Frederick's passion fruit  entangling with it but not flowering yet. When the Frederick's blooms will it pollinate the panama red and vise versa?

It’s his neighbors tree, we’re just thinking it’s a Oro Negro, what’s the consensus?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about Carrie mango color when ripe
« on: August 01, 2020, 08:58:07 PM »
I have a really nice 4-5 yr old Carrie and not impressed with the fruit. I just watched a youtube of a tasting of Carrie, they were more yellow than green! Mine maybe have a tiny area of the hint of yellow. My question is, does the quality get watered down/change with several growers grafting off different trees? Seems like it would be ever changing slightly till its not a Carrie??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about pest on my papayas?
« on: July 03, 2020, 07:13:01 PM »
There’s a wasp looking insect that seems to be injecting larvae into the fruit?
What is it and is there a way to stop it? The pic shows the fruit and I’m sure
That’s what is causing the white stuff on the fruit.

My avocado tree was tagged "Florida Hass" but I don't see that variety anywhere when I google it.
I do see "Super Hass", is Florida Hass just another name for Super Hass? I'm a little confused of
what variety I have. Tree is in the pics.

Planted it last October, Its grown great this spring and just realized a few wayward branches were growing from under the graft. Can I just cut them about a 1/2' from the trunk? Less or more? It was tagged as a Florida Hass.
I'm thinking since its growing so well that it wouldn't hurt it but...

This was it last October.

Here it is now and that lower branch sticking out at the bottom is the larger of the three.

Here are the limbs at the graft.

It’s a Kari, been in the ground for two months.
I haven’t fertilized it. I do give it a deep watering
every couple days from my artesian well if we have no rain.
Also it’s been blooming like crazy!

I made lemonade out of lemons  ;D

I put this Minneola Tangelo(honey bell) in the ground one year ago and now. Just had to share.

Ive had it in a pot until I could get a structure built for it. I tore down the old
and built the new this week. I ordered a panama red passion fruit vine for the opposite side
which should arrive this week. The structure is not completely finished just yet.

Here's the old:

Here's the new structure with the Federicks, the panama red will be planted on the opposite side.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this true pertaining to passion fruit?
« on: February 29, 2020, 08:19:27 PM »
I got this from a seller:

In order to produce their delicious tangy tropical tasting fruit Passionflowers must be cross-pollinated by another seedling, species, or cultivar. The Frederick Passionfruit is considered capable of self pollination but crossing it may improve crop yield.  Bumblebees are perfectly designed for this as the pollen is rubbed on their back as they circle the corona drinking nectar and then carry it to the next flower. With most passionflowers the 5 stamens (pollen producing glands) arch downward once they are ready to release their pollen (and nectar) then on the next flower, hopefully, the 3 stigmas will arch downward once they are ready to receive pollen thus doing the work to produce fruit if the pollen is accepted. We generally wait until the fruits become yellow (in yellow fruited cultivars) and wrinkled and have fallen

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where can I buy a Panama Red passion fruit?
« on: February 23, 2020, 06:09:25 PM »
Is there a good online source to buy Panama Red passion fruit? I have a Fredricks
and want to have both growing on a trellis. I searched online and it's not easy to find.

I've had trees push out a second bloom and have had them only have
one bloom. Anybody out there know why?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Kent mango is going into full bloom!
« on: December 18, 2019, 09:07:54 AM »
It's going into full bloom in the middle of December in east central Florida (Palm Bay). I know it will bloom again
but it's still way too early. Odd...
The others are showing what I thought was a new flush but now second guessing myself.

I live in Palm Bay, Fl. and would like to grow some grapes but I would like to know
what my options are? My grandfather used to grow muscadine but I was never a
big fan of them. I'm pretty sure I can't grow the typical grocery store grapes but
am curious if there are any close relatives to them that I'm not aware of? Are there
any seedless grapes I can grow in my area?

I neglected it, but last summer started giving it some love :-)

I am lucky to have a arteisan well, I just need to open the valve and it flows perfectly to soak the trees.
