had an idea to wrap some figs that split before ripening, with buddy tape...it worked very well, allowing the fruits to properly ripen without pathogens and bugs invading the flesh.

I'd imagine this wonderful tape could be applied to other fruits that split, like annona fruits, guavas, and others....I'm wondering if it is also effective to wrap young fruits with buddy tape, to stymie the carribbean fruit fly's oviposition process.

I may have grafted some surinam cherry scions on, upside down...they don't seem to care...

anyone else don't this by accident or on purpose?

I guess its commonly used to dwarf trees? or no?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / double wedge graft, anyone attempted?
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:42:38 PM »
Soon I will attempt the following, but wondering if anyone has attempted or heard of this method.

Take two scions prepared for a cleft graft, and line them up side by side, and insert them into the same root stock.

Would they heal together (the two scions)in the middle cut, and also heal to either side thats touching cambium of rootstock?

like a sandwich cleft graft.

Sounds tricky but plausible in theory.

anyone growing?

Just got a pair from a friend, I hear they taste good, they are large, and endangered...

I doubt anyone's growing, but doesn't hurt to ask

I'm giving 3 seeds away to the first request,
and 2 seeds to the second request.

Shipping must be paid by u, either paypal or send check.

This Rollinia deliciosa fruit is the first believed to be harvested in the Orlando/Winter Park area.

SO for now (being that these seeds had no pollinator present) we are assuming the seeds will come true.

The fruit was delicious, and the tree is cold hearty to about 32 F, and it will still hold fruits and flowers if protected from wind!

So the name of this particular tree is "winter park", and I think it befits the tree, being it came from winter park, and its a cold area for this tree, so this one fruit was a long shot!

Good luck growing this one!  it fruits  in a pot at around 4 to 5yrs...and it has flowered non stop for around 2.5 yrs!!! believe it or not!

So who wants some special annoa seeds?  here is pics of the fruit eaten today on mother's day!

Anyone growing, or heard of this being grown?

I hear its slow.

Thanks!

I've noticed sometimes the sun heats my hose up, to the point of melting plastic just about!

But really, I can smell the essence of the hose (plastic smell), which makes me think of harmful BPA from plastics.

I've always let the hose run so the water stops smelling like hose plastic, then I water (at night the water is cool enough from cooking in the day time, to put right on your plants)

It's most likely negligible, but I always do this being OCD paranoid, and what have u, and what not, and so on and so forth.

Any thoughts from ya'll? do yous guys have this same issue?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your least favorite mango
« on: May 11, 2012, 12:43:20 AM »
Wondering what mango u like to eat the least of?

Store bought or imported doesn't count.

I want to hear what cultivars are lame, and why.

For me its that darn miracle mango....It just didn't taste all that great, and never seems to live up to its name.

next would be Tommy Atkins, for looking so nice and tasting so...opposite of how it appears.

Recipes / Toasted Canistel and Cream cheese Sandich
« on: May 10, 2012, 12:34:52 AM »
Just put the two together (canistel and cream cheese) at an equal ratio...or whatever ratio u desire

spread on two toasted pieces of bread, and eat a sandwich with this combination above as the meat.

You can choose to blend the canistel with the cream cheese, or leave the canistel chunks large, or in slices, with cheese spread on bread.

U could substitute canistel for the following fruits:

Persimmon
Avocado (sweet type preferred)
sapollia (make sure to slice thin, if not blended if too watery..don't let it make your bread get mushy!)
Mamey
Sugar apple
Atemoya (although it would be a disgrace to do this to a good one!)

and whatever else you can tolerate eating with cream cheese on bread!

Don't forget, if you are a sugar junkie...go ahead and grab the agave nectar or honey!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Buddy Tapesters Vs Parafilmers
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:54:39 AM »
Have done a few experimental grafts...they seem to push out leaves slightly, but grow slow as heck...so I removed bag and tape around union...only to find that they've healed...and are just growing slow...

Wanted any feedback from others who've experienced this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Who's fruiting a tree, as a bonsai??
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:17:10 PM »
Wanting to get a thread going, with pics, and info about trees currently fruiting as bonsais.

This Miracle fruit tree, Synsepalum dulcificum, is about 6 yrs old, and is now flowering....I hope it holds some fruits...this is it's second blooming.

What other bonsai plants are fruiting on this forum?? Not really interested in the rest of the world wide web...just u guys...so please don't post a bunch of pics of other peoples trees...What's actively being grown by this group?

Has anyone here ever attempted to suffocate a pest on a potted plant...with only using C02, carbon dioxide...either from a tank, or dry ice?

I've always wanted to suffocate some ants in the root ball of my plant...I wonder if I could bag the rootball and suffocate them?

I wonder If I'll kill beneficial organisms as well?

and I suppose the plant can't make oxygen fast enough to keep the ants alive??

I wonder if this would work for mealys, scale...and such..??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / icecream mango
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:20:35 PM »
I like these mangoes! they taste amazing...but the tree is so hard to protect from fungus, and anthracnose that its ridiculous...

this five gallon tree from zill purchased as a three late last year, has had some fruits set, with only protection from above, preventing rain drops from hitting leaves/blooms.

Can't wait to taste a few.

For now, this tree has a place in my garden.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana bashing
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:07:01 PM »
I thought this video was perfect for this thread, and how I feel about growing bananas.

They are require too much maintenance, are disease prone, and are easily tissue propagated...so from a nursery man's point of view (or at least mine), it's one of the worst families of fruiting plants to try and make a living with.  Pineapples fall into this category for me as well (tissue culture+thorns=something I don't want to grow).

Don't get me wrong!  Nothing like a good home grown banana! and I'm always eager to eat someones fruit, but not to put a plant in the ground (or even a pot) to care for and fruit.

Let's get heated up, until we make bananas foster on this thread...I want to hear reasons from both sides, but don't expect me to stop feeling like our buddy, Berman (in the video), when it comes to bananas.

Berman the banana tree!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona reticulata Hybrids
« on: May 05, 2012, 03:00:55 PM »
I am growing a few now.

I've been collecting reticulatas and other annonas of interest...with hopes of compatibility for pollination.

Have one from Belize, with yellow fruits (supposedly)

one with red fruits like the one posted before from Israel (grafts pushing nicely, but could still fail..have 4 grafts pushing well, so chances are, this one is here to stay)

Have a few others that I forget the characteristics of, but need to confer with the persons I got them from...a few could be variants of reticulata, rather than crosses.

What else can members add to this annona thread?

I know you all want to eat them...so why not comment!

Recipes / Pitangatuba icecream
« on: May 05, 2012, 02:46:28 PM »
Mash one pitangatuba (remove seed) into one cup of icecream (preferably nice vanilla icecream).

when mashing, make sure to use a knife if possible, it helps to cut up any fibrous bits of fruit....also stir thoroughly.

Now enjoy an endangered tasting treat.

Same recipe can be used for pitanga (and similar structured relatives), just use more fruits...about a ratio of 8-1, rather than 1-1...fruit to icecream.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona pollinator
« on: May 05, 2012, 11:04:56 AM »
Took this photo yesterday,

it's of my favorite atemoya (Pet Pak Chong)

As luck would have it...a pollinating beetle was enjoying the scenery inside of this flower.

Thank goodness I have nitidulids to help me pollinate (two types here, a large one like in photo, and smaller ones), I don't have the time this year to do it all myself!

you may have to open the photo and click twice to see the detail. Enjoy. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Scion stacking
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:01:54 PM »
Has anyone tried stacking scions? and basically try to attach 3 or more scions (most likely in a cleft graft) stacked on top of the other?

It seems like sap flow could make it to the top scion in time, but the further up the chain of scions, the less likely the graft would be to take....I assume...

But I've seen leaves pushing on scions only 4 days after grafting, so theoretically it could be possible for the sap to make it all the way up (maybe 4 or more scions stacked) to the top scion.

Any comments from the peanut butter fruit gallery would be appreciatated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Post pics of Pitombas!
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:44:53 PM »
I don't have an image quite yet, but my little 3gal tree from Pine Island Nursery, is fruiting...I will post pics and my feelings about this fruit.

Seems like it gets underutilized in FL, although nurseries stock this plant.  I don't usually go to peoples houses and see nice specimens of this plant...let alone a specimen at all.

The last one I remember seeing was at Cookie monsters abode.   It was most impressive one I've seent.
Who else is hiding this one?  Let your pitomba's start popping up out of the woodwork.
