Fruit identification
« on: October 10, 2018, 11:54:31 AM »
Just noticed one of my neighbor's trees has fruit on it:

Can anyone tell me what kind of fruit this is? Thanks.

Yeah, it's not that furry. Looks like limes almost, when they're green.

No. Just not sure what type of fruit. It doesn't look exactly like any citrus I've seen before.

Scratch fruit skin and you can tell if it is citrus or get a better picture, closeup of leaf front & back & fruit. Back up and show whole tree including trunk, those are the things you need to key in on an unknown tree. Smell crushed leaves and describe.

Looks like citrus to me also. Did you ask your neighbor what it is?
Or ask for a fruit and cut it in half,  it looks like unripe citrus?

I like to know what the fruit is before I ask if I can have some of it. :) When I asked someone if I could have some longans, she was really surprised I knew what it was.

But for this tree, I don't think the owner knows anyway. The previous owner planted the tree.

Most all citrus has thorns on the branches, I don't see any on this tree & the fruit doesn't look right either. The closest citrus I know of that looks close would be rough lemon. It's used as rootstock, but the graft may have died & the rootstock took over.

If it is rough lemon, you don't want to eat it.

I don't think it's a rough lemon. It looks much too smooth to be that.

One of the dominant characteristics of rutaceae (citrus family) is essential oil glands in the leaves (pellucid glands). Leaves could go a long way toward narrowing this down  :)

Like I said a better close up of the fruit & branches would. But most all citrus has a thorn at each node.

Really, if you've ever peeled citrus before you'll recognize it by scratching the skin. Probably you can even tell orange from grapefruit from lime or tangerine. Otherwise just wait till winter and they ripen. Looks like citrus to me.

What kind of citrus, you think? Lemon maybe? Looks like they're not ripe yet. I guess in December?
