Mangoes arrived in great shape. They are in different stages of ripeness so you don’t have to eat 10 pounds all in one day (although I would do that happily lol). The ones I’ve tried so far were so delicious I don’t think I could even look at a Kent or a Haden mango from the store the same again. 10/10

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB fresh mangoes
« on: July 04, 2022, 09:25:09 AM »
Is anyone still selling mango boxes this season and shipping them? I’m in Michigan so there’s no shipping restrictions. Any varieties like lemon zest, pickering, NDM, maha chanok, bombay, etc etc

7
Are you shipping or local sales only?

8
I have heard before that some varieties are better for starting from cutting while others are difficult to root and are better to use in grafting, do you know if Tice is like that?

9
How fresh are the different Annona seeds specifically? I’ve had a hell of a time trying to sprout older seeds but fresh ones straight from the source tend to grow readily so I’m just wondering

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Annona scleroderma
« on: May 15, 2022, 04:40:09 PM »
Hi all, I have two questions for the experts out there. First, is Annona scleroderma compatible with Annona montana or Annona muricata? Second, when is the best season for getting scions to graft this species? I had a prized plant and it is not looking so good so I am trying to replace it if it dies.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Rare Annonaceae seeds sales!!!

Yes I agree, going to the source usually results in better seeds.

Could you please share where you got the a. hypoglauca seeds? Thanks

From a page called Selva Mia on the annonaceae forum on facebook.

I had low germination rate as well, while curiously I got 2/3 of my hypoglauca seeds to sprout from a seller directly in Peru. HOWEVER this is not a complaint against Giampaolo I would still buy from him, this is just something that is part of the gamble when buying tropical seeds online. I find it’s always better results buying directly from sellers in the country of origin just by nature of how fresh those seeds ought to be
I am not sure which seeds you bought, but in my experience the tinier the seeds of an Annona species, the harder they are to germinate. On the other hand, if you put many tiny seeds in a small pot, they seem to stimulate each other.

Since not all of the species have super tiny seeds, you should also be aware of the biology of the offered species as they are very specialized rain forest species.

Annona hypoglauca for example is said to have an only 5% germination rate and is spread by fishs. Their germination might profit from a chemical compound, that is found within the gastro intestinal system of the fishs.
Annona nitida on the other hand has a special seed coat/parenchyma, that allows the seeds to float over very long distances during the rain season, without soaking with water risking early germination. I received the hint to really grind the seed coat with sand paper and let them soak, maybe even in GA3, until you can see the seeds inflated.

However these are just my two cents on this subject. But what I can tell for sure is, that from the many conversations I had with him, I can tell, that he is very concerned about the future of the Annonaceae rainforest species. He really wants to spread them as far as possible. So there would be no interest on his side to sell old seeds in my opinion.

I also never received part of my package one order and never received a response after but I didn’t press the issue because it was like a $6 pack or something small like that. Interesting to see others with the same problem

Does anyone have any sources for these? Particularly the latter? I haven’t had any luck finding even a hint about P. Insularum for sale anywhere but it’s a common species growing throughout the pacific.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cerrado species and dormancy
« on: October 29, 2021, 11:58:54 AM »
I have managed to sprout a few cerrado species like Annona vepretorum, Annona crassiflora, Duguetia furfuracea etc., and I know that cerrado species sometimes have a dormancy period where they like no water at all...these plants are now seedlings of a couple months old, none of them are taller than maybe 7 inches, so my question is, when does one first allow them to go into this dormancy? Do you grow them as per usual for the first year, or maybe until they reach a certain height or trunk caliper? Any advice is appreciated. Right now I have them growing with my cacti in the greenhouse, not too humid and I am watering only when the soil is dry to the touch.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peruvian Amazon Annona ID help
« on: July 04, 2021, 02:47:13 AM »
First is this plant here. I purchased the seeds from a vendor on the facebook Annona forum from Peru, they said the botanical name for this plant was "Annona lisa," I thought maybe it was Annona edulis but the seeds appear to be different. I also thought it could be Rollinia but the fruits and seeds look different to what Im used to too. Its from the Peruvian Amazon as the title states.

Second ID request is this cherimoya variety. Purchased it from the local Chinese market, I picked this one in particular because it didnt look like all the others in the bin, all others were the typical smooth cherimoya. When I cut it open I was very surprised to see how thick the skin was...but when I tasted it I was mind blown. It tastes EXACTLY like strawberry banana yogurt. I had my family try it just to make sure I wasnt going crazy and they all agreed. Fruit was medium sized and delicious but the only problem was it was loaded with seeds. This one single fruit had 65 large viable seeds. I know its cherimoya but I was just wondering if anyone knew what cultivar it might be based on this description.

The mangoes arrived today in perfect condition. There were more than I expected with many different varieties and I was pleasantly surprised!! So far I tried the lemon meringue and the gary...and when i tell you my mind was blown...the gary mango legitimately is the best mango I have ever tried to date, we will see how the others compare. I cannot recommend this seller enough!! 11/10. Thank you Sijo.

Received mine as well! Great packaging, fast shipping, delicious mangoes. I had my friends and family try them out and they all so far said that the lemon zest is the best mango they have ever tried. Pickering is also really good. Lemon merengue has an interesting twang to it that I like a lot. Guava mango tastes like mango and carrot juice combined, also pretty good. Waiting for the maha chanok and bombay to get to peak ripeness to try them out, especially excited about the maha chanok.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone have quenepa?
« on: May 25, 2021, 04:43:22 PM »
The quenepas that I have tried had an excellent flavor but the flesh is very fibrous and clings to the seed like a bad mango or a santol. The variety I tried was good flesh to seed ratio but it is definitely a more of a fruit you eat as a treat than one you eat as a food to fill you up.

Is it local pick up only even on the smaller plants?

I know this is a long shot, but can anyone identify this mystery Annona? This was bought from a Vietnamese grocery store last year here in Michigan. This is the dried peel and seed. When it was fresh it was modestly sized, they were each a little less than a pound, the outer skin was covered in brown fuzzy hair and ripened to a dark olive green brown color. The flesh was yellow when fresh and dried to this orange color. I planted the seeds last year and they looked like cherimoya seedlings, but they all died when we lost power last winter unfortunately. I am mad at myself for not posting it when I had it fresh, and taking a picture of it when it was fresh and when the plants were alive but this is what I have to work with now unfortunately. I got back into Annonaceae and am wanting to see if I can find out what variety of Cherimoya or Atemoya the fruits might have been so I can relocate the plant and grow it again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annonaceae seed viability
« on: May 09, 2021, 02:43:18 PM »
So I am debating on whether or not to buy some Annona dioica seeds that were harvested in February of this year. In the past I have had good luck with fresh Annonaceae seeds but those bought from places like Tradewindsfruits or Rarepalmseeds never sprouted. I know Annona dioica is from the cerrado/pantanal so it should not be as finicky as say muricata, salzmannii, scleroderma etc, but a couple months still could make or break viability right? Do yall think the rarer Annona seeds keep good viability for a couple months? I plan on scouring and using GA3 if I get them as well.

Is this a true Jackfruit or is this some other artocarpus variety?
