Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jaboticabaholics Anonymous
« on: September 20, 2017, 01:36:54 AM »
Thank you! I guess I won't see fruits for awhile.

I planted one of them jaboticaba not too long ago.  How long do I expect it to bear fruits? My tree was from a 5 gallon size. Thanks!

It depends on species, fertilizer, water... sun...: if your tree is an hibrid red one, it should do it at 3 to 5 years old... if it is paulista or sabará, more than 8 years old... 5 galon should be a mature jaboticaba

how tall is it? maybe 3 feet tall? in that case, it should do it soon

Alhamdulillah, you guys are recovering from the storm. Luckily. I didn't buy a house down in Isla Pinella. Even I liked the spaceous area down there. My wife hates the heat and humidity. And mom wants to be near the grand kids. So we bought AZ and CA, Scottsdale and Riverside. That's where they are now. Family support if stuff happens.

Since I am half way around the world, I can't be home if emergency arises. My wife is Asian with kids. All hell would break loose or worse over there if I am not at home to assist them.

Sounds like our old farm. We had 10 80gal bladders, 2 5 HP booster pumps and 30,000gal holding tanks with 3 wells. All kind of filters up to your ying yang.  You are not living off your land and yet you're running as much power or complicated system as some of the farmers in the deep south.  Might be those California's craziness.

Here's my old crib. Cattle ranch. Nearly 100 acres of peace and freedom. Obviously, I can't plant any tropical gardens there.

Below is our current crib, replacing all the Caballo with tropical fruit tree.

Very nice. Congratulations!

CA Hockey,

That's one helluva tropical fruit paradise. My folks have about 5 acres in Riverside area. They have as much tropical fruit trees as you do and their water bills are like $300-400/month. That's only drip system. They also have a pool. Crazy California...

I only have about 25 trees and massive yards right now. When I get home, I will plant some more fruit trees in the lower half of the hill, the front yard and in between rows. Possibly remove some of grass in the backyard and plant a row of sapodilla or something. I need some shades to keep the house cool in the afternoon and keep my electric bills low. Like you, I am also creating a tropical fruit paradise. Good Luck!!

Nice! One acre is pretty big for Southern California. I have a big lot too. I am not sure, but my brother who is a California-resident expert told me not to plant mangoes and avocadoes near walls, structures, or cement areas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please, help me identify this mango
« on: September 13, 2017, 10:35:40 PM »
I just had this mango and it tasted really good. It tasted like Nam Doc Mai or Dumaguete mango from the Philippines not like the one we buy at Costco or the supermarket back home.

I am going to smuggle some seeds back. Thanks!

Would ilama survive the cold nights in Inland Empire area? I was able to experience the winter in Riverside earlier in the year. There was couple of nights that the temps dipped into the mid 30s. I didn't see any dead trees or plant from anyone, but I am not too sure.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Questions About The New Zealand Rose Apple
« on: September 13, 2017, 04:43:59 AM »
I am in Doha, Qatar, at the moment. Looks like the Arabs like the New Zealand Rose apple. I was skeptical at first, but this apple is good. Very crisp, juicy, and sweet. Much better than the American varieties. Is it possible to collect the seeds? Will it germinate? I am collecting a bunch of seeds here. My favorite desert fruit is the watermelon from the Arabian Peninsula. It's super juicy and sweet. The Arabs call it "hav-hav."

I spoke to my friend yesterday. He said he's letting nature taking care of his land now. He's chilling in Atlanta. I am assuming that with newly planted fruit trees on an opened field, the scenerio isn't pretty especially when there's a hurricane rolling by.

My friend high tailed to NE Georgia. His 700 tree orchard on Pine Island is a goner.

Dang, nice tree. I have two big guava trees and one young white guava tree.  The other two look good but I have no idea how the fruits taste like. I heard the white guava is good tasting. I got it from a friend in San Diego.

Good luck everyone!  I have a friend who has newly planted 10 acres of tropical fruits on Pine Island. He must be pooping in his pants right now. He possibly gonna pack up and leave that island to California for good.

I am planting my pineapples into the ground where's semi-shad and moist. I am letting nature takes care of it. I will find out in about a year.

My wife and folks told me that it is crazily hot, dry, and windy back home. It is not any better in Doha. We're hitting 100 plus degrees with humidity everyday.
