Tropical Fruit Discussion / What potting mix for Rainforest plum?
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:13:52 AM »
Thought I would ask the pro's. I'm getting ready to trans plant my Rain forest plums that I got from Oscar into single larger pots. I was just wondering what mix should I use for them, and pot size. After this I'm planning to plant them into the ground.

Thanks, Joe

Cindy at Green Sea Farms have been very helpful when I inquired about different varieties:

www.greenseafarm.com

I grow them, and Cindy is where I get them from, she will fix you up with beautiful plants.

I grow Azadi, Girkauets, and Parfianka. Big fruit, and very soft seeds. I don't like the hard seed varities. Azadi and Girkauets have grown best so far in florida. And I love the flavor of Parfianka.

Mark,

I hope you enjoy your mango tree. I have several tree’s that Dr. Richard Campbell Sr grafted for me, and two that Dr. Campbell Jr did as well for me. If I remember right I believe one of them is a Golden Lippens.

I don’t know what everyone else is talking about, But yes you have to give them time to grow and mature. Most tree’s to me don’t seem to taste what their supposed to until they get to be around  10 years old. That’s just my opinion.

Good Luck.

Joe.

I will have some grafted plants coming later this year...i think this is your best bet..unless you get lucky and find a rogue Grimal...I think most of the 3 gal or larger plants got gobbled up!

I know that you are grafting some this summer. I'm suppose to be the first one to be able to buy one, Remember?

I still want to try to find a large one.

Joe

if you find a source for some larger trees let me know...I want some too.

If you don't know, who will? If I hear of anything I'll give you a text.   Now Get Grafting!!! ;D

its not good when the leaves turn brown but don't fall off the tree

Ok, then what can it be Rob ?

I have seen tnis before,  the trees were planted next to each other and both in the same raised bed.  The Monroe thrived and was healthy, the Wilson next to it died back branch by branch.  Leaves turning brown and not dropping.  When I see this my first thought is something going on with the roots.

Thanks Rob, I had a Lula in this very spot and it didn't grow, I pulled it out and replaced it with the Monroe and it seems the monroe is not growing now but yet 4ft over the Mexicola G is doing fine? ???

My avocado leaves turn brown on the tips of mature leaves when I am overwatering them.

Brad

Thanks Brad, But my tips are not turning brown. The whole leave slowly turns brown, about tea color. They haven't fallen off yet.

Well, while we are on the subject. I have a Momroe that I bought 3 months ago, 7gal tree, about 6ft tall and planted in the ground next to my Mexicola grada. The leave's are also turning brown. They started at first on the bottom and have slowly moved up the tree. The tree has flush buds, and swelling but has not done anything as of yet. Just leave's turning brown. I quit watering the tree beings we are having a wetter then normal sring season.
Any Help would be great.

Thanks, Joe.

Oscar

I'd love to see the before and after...I will try to share some pics of my trees...I'm going to prune the red jabos heavily.

I wasn't able to prune the jaboticaba today as a had to take care of a big hibiscus that snapped in 1/2 at the trunk in a big wind storm. Will try again tomorrow. I'll definitely post some photos. Thanks for inspiring me to do this! I'm certain the tree will become a LOT more productive. Will also make it a lot easier to mow around the tree as added benefit.

Yes Oscar, Please show us a before and after shots of your trees. I did mine about a year ago and the tree looks great.

Thanks, Joe.

P.S. the rainforest plums are coming up great, 8 of the 10 came up.

Hello Joe;

I love johns R's Place ! i bought a few trees from John and all are doing great !.
Please send my regards to John R !..

Im live in St Augustine FL , about 2-3 Hours from JR's Place.

Joe where you the one selling Mangos from his place ? if so i remember you..
If my family can Source The Grafted Carla Trees then i will ask them to send me at least 5 trees 1st, they would have to be shipped Bare Root.

My family members in PR last year sent me Bare root Guanabana trees & they did Fine.
If they can locate the trees then i will send you one & better yet ill take a trip to Johns Place ;)..
I love going there !.

Ed..

P.s the Grafted trees in PR range from 8-12$ .. no worries about the payment.
I will save this thread..

No that was not me at John's nursery selling mango's. Here is my cell # 321-749-8195 if you should ever come down to John's place maybe to could travel 21 miles further south and check out the grove on south Merritt island. If you come down after July 4 we should be getting into our mango season here. That's when the early varities start to ripen.

Hope luck on your search, talk to you soon.

Joe.

Ed,

If you are able to obtain some Carla avocado’s from PR, would you consider letting us try to grow one here in central Brevard in the grove on Merritt Island. Would be a good experiment to see how it would grow up here also compared to SW Florida. How far north are you from us? I saw before where you pick up tree’s from a friend of mine John at Tropical island nursery. Would be glad to reimburse you for any cost and shipping. Good luck on finding the tree’s. Hope you have some luck.

Joe.

Those famous last words "this is the last mango tree I promise" ...before I find myself all alone with a yard full of trees haha  :P    In all honesty I will most likely end up with both trees. Am I correct in assuming Spirit of 76 has a more classic tropical flavor whereas Angie has a more rich apricot flavor?

To me, Yes a apricot flavor.
Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful tree and bare's heavy each year, but I couldn't get past the apricot flavor.
That's just me. Best thing to do is taste one for yourself and see if you like it. ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Secret to a Full Mango Bloom
« on: February 27, 2014, 08:46:29 AM »
lol.. The tree just needed some Iron. :)

70

The flesh is tangerine orange and without fiber. The flavor is classified in the 'Alphonso' class of mangos with a deep sweetness and sophisticated profile rich in apricot.

Disease resistance is good. The flavor sophisticated profile rich in apricot is right on also. I myself didn't care for the flavor of the Angie, but I mostly got the tree for the name sake. I got the tree for Angie who is taking care of Mary (Eds Wife) and the grove.
IMHO I would go with the 76 if you have the room.

Hope this helped, Joe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: new avos
« on: February 20, 2014, 08:48:50 PM »
i went by my friend john's place and picked up three more avocado trees.  first, a "poncho" as a housewarming present for a lady friend of mine.  i'm going to keep it in its pot in my greenhouse until mid april and then go plant it at her house.  poncho is pretty frost - hardy after the first couple years.  we have a spot picked out in a sheltered location on the south side of her new house.  a couple or three years of babying (cover with sheets, with a light bulb underneath on cold nights) and maybe she'll have an avo tree.

also picked up a "gainesville"  which i understand is similar to "mexicola."  this one is tiny, about fifteen inches tall in a 4" "tree pot."  this also will be nurtured inside the greenhouse, until it's a lot bigger.  then, it goes outside.

third, i got a "fantastic"  which is the same as a "pryor" except for the copyrighted name and possibly the rootstock.  this is also going to be grown on for another year or two in a larger pot in the greenhouse, then planted out when it has a trunk maybe the size of a baseball bat.  this is one of the "fantastics" that are produced by hopkins in immokalee.

pryor and fantastic have a reputation of good cold-hardiness.  i already have a "cairo" growing outside the greenhouse in a sheltered location.  it came through the winter with very little damage.  the terminal bud got zapped, but i was going to prune that to encourage branching anyway.  my mexicola made it through two winters before i built the greenhouse around it, and there are a few mature avos in the neighborhood.

i'm not sure where all this is leading, but the basic idea is to push the envelope for tropical fruit here in north florida.  if all goes well, i hope to have hardy avos growing in the yard, and more tender ones in the greenhouse with the mangos.  i have pryor/fantastic, mexicola, gainesville, and cairo, i hope to have a supply of seeds for cold-hardy rootstock.  i may be able to get something going.

i know most of these cold-hardy varieties have only mediocre quality fruit.  if i have enough seed stock, i will be able to throw a lot of seeds in the ground,  i have four acres to play with.  who knows, if i throw the genetic dice often enough, i may get lucky.  an avocado cold hardy enough to stand north florida/south georgia winters that produces good fruit?   who knows?

many failures can be traced to a lack of making the attempt.

meanwhile, i'll get to eat a lot of avocados to get the seeds.   what's not to like?

Where did you find the gainesville at? I have been trying to find one for sometime now.

Thanks, Joe.

OK- Monroe is it-planted today

thanks all for your suggestions  :)

I mulched around  it after this photo

I must have it's twin! Looks just like the one I just planted in the grove.

Remove the cane and tape, the tree doesn't need it anymore.

Good Luck, Joe.

I was going to, especially after seeing almost the entire crop of Julie at Mounts looking bad...but then I read about the possible dangers.

Anyone spraying their trees? Those who are not, Any anthracnose seen so far?

If you use the search box you might find a thread about a spray program I once posted. It got beat up pretty good by one of the administrators here on the forum, but the spray program worked real well for us.
The last couple of years we started Sulfur before bud break, and 2 apps of Manzate 200. Seems to work for us.
