Growth habit of Phoenix mango tree.
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:41:15 AM »
Has anyone had a Phoenix mango tree long enough to be able to describe the growth habit of the tree. And do you like the flavor of the fruit.

I did a search, and no info available .

Thanks,

Joe.

I don't think there is much info out on the grafted tree since it just came out

So far my Phoenix tree is on its 3rd flush for this year. I planted it in "winter"
Tipping delays a new flush so i guess it could have grown faster if i didn't.
Tipped (when i first bought it), 1st flush, 2nd flush, Tipped, 3rd flush

My friends cotton candy tree is flushed 5-6 times in a pot (from a 3 gal, now in a 15 gal), he bought it the same time i got the phoenix.
Its like 7 feet tall now. No tipping though

Mine in ground for 8 months with two flushes but very small flushes, appears to be slow grower in CA.

Can someone please post pictures of new fresh growth leaves and matured leaves? wanted to compare if I got real one, lately Florida nurseries are sending us mislabeled stuff.

More upright than spreading

Mine blew over in Irma and a bit more bendy than my other trees

Growth less than juicy peach and sweet tart and looks to be moderate growth

Also had some growth out of rootstock

Why are you keeping it in a little dinky pot and not placing it in the ground?  My Phoenix has surpassed 6 ft and the trunk has thickened very fast,  It is my most vigorous grower now! In the ground, that trunk would double in thickness quickly. Irma whacked mine right when it was flushing so the flush created shorter nodes.

Here are 2 pictures of my phoenix trees.

I received it from toptropicals at the end of April. When I received with tree, it essentially defoliated but had a nice thick-caliper trunk. The first flush under my care showed these uniquely-shaped long slender twisted leaves. Subsequent flushes have looked like more standard mango flushes.

Tree is growing here in Orange CA but my cotton candy which is next to it and came under similar circumstances (but from plantogram) has grown more vigorously and is more than a foot taller and wider on both sides.

I attached a second picture to show how the phoenix is doing compared to some other mangoes. From left to right: back row, (far left, almost out of picture) Madame Francis, Kathy, Juicy Peach, Sweet Tart; front row, Peach Cobbler, Phoenix, Cotton Candy).

The white powdery stuff on the leaves is WP Surround. I got a hint from Carlos's website. I sprayed it hoping to prevent burning of my trees when it reached 100 in August. Nothing burned except for my Sharwil avocado but I think it may have cooled the mangoes too much in September as they seemed to just pause during the first 3 weeks of 70-80 degree weather in September. They are picking up again after this past week of heat but this may be the last flush of the season for them.

As an aside, I also have Ambrosia and Kathy and both have been slow growers for me. Ambrosia put out 1 flush. Kathy put out 2-3 but only grows about 4 inches in between spurts. Kesar also very slow growing, with most of the growth causing the tree to branch out.
