Title: Thai sweet pink Tamarind ripening?
Post by: Frog Valley Farm on February 08, 2019, 03:58:51 PM: We got our first decent crop of Tamarinds. Anybody know when and how to tell about when they are ripe?

To me in the past when I eat Tamarind, when you squeeze the shell it crack. That may be too ripe for you. When almost ripe it should have space between shell and the meat. The meat shrink as it ripens.

I like it when it almost ripe as it is sweet and a sour.

Anyway, when the shell cracks easily at finger pressure they are ready.
By the way, how old is your tree? is it grafted?

Post by: Frog Valley Farm on February 10, 2019, 11:44:00 AM: Thanks everyone for the information. Our tree was a 1ft. grafted tree when bought from Excalibur about 7 years ago. When we bought our current farm I decided to dig it up and transplant it here as it was still quite small. This was 3 years 5 mos. ago. It’s about 8’ -10 tall and wide. This is its second fruiting but last year all two fruit dropped before ripening. It has been flowering for more than six years. This year there is considerably more fruit and they seem to be holding. This has been a very low maintenance tree that doesn’t get any extra water. I hope it’s what we bought.
