I have two varieties of plantains-Saba and Hua moa. Nothing in particular, we just like them for starch and dessert. I also have some Thai and violet ornamental bananas. I am planting a lot of this Musa Velutina for privacy purposes.

Thanks for information. I will give that a try.

Avocado trees also piss me off. I have a big old tree planted by the previous owner. It has no flower for years. So, I went out and bought another one. Don't know how long that one will produce fruits either.

Cut it off low to the ground and graft to selected shoots that arise.  Did this last year and now have 9 fine fruit hanging on a Holiday, Sir Prize and Ardith.  I dropped quite a few too after bloom set and all of the Pinkertons.

Being that you already have a very extensive root system you'll quickly have a new vigorous tree that will set a lot of fruit quickly.

Sir Prize fruit, August.

Galangal is easy. Just stick it into the ground and give it some mulch and plenty of water. I love galangal.

Yes,

I have seen it with fruits in Orange County and San Diego. Also in the inland areas too.

Wow looks tasty. I've never eaten a atemoya do they grow well in southern California?

I asked the same question awhile back. The consensus is no. I am thinking to plant the Javan plum instead, but that is a nasty plant. What I meant is it is too bushy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is It Too Late To Germinate Illama Seeds?
« on: October 16, 2017, 01:33:51 AM »
So, I bought some illama seeds from Raul Ruiz. I am wondering if it is too late to germinate seeds? I bought GA-3 acid to help with germination too. I am having my dad to germinate these seeds. If it's too late to germinate, can I store them over the winter? I am from Southern California.

They are. There's a bunch of them Vietnamese people in my area who are growing atemoya instead of sugar apple.

I had tasted many varieties of Sugar apple, and they're only have one flavor: sweet and very sweet. For the first time (last week), I tasted a Atemoya (Geffner), all I can say is that I haven't tasted any SA that even come close to it, more fragrance with some acidity. I hope Vietnamese people spread the words and start to plant more Atemoya.

161
This is a dumb question, but how do you measure or estimate something to be 350 ppm? I just bought some acid with a tiny spoon. My dad is gonna germinate these seeds.

Thanks.

I sprouted 3 different types of Ilama with 350 ppm ga3 soak for 24 hours. Most or all popped up in two weeks or so. I wouldn't try sprouting these without it.

It is definitely guava season. My wife showed me a couple pix of the guava in our backyard. They look wonderful. They're of unknown varieties-possibly Mexican, Thai, and Thai seedless or less seed. Makes me missing home.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where Can I Find Sour Averrhoa Carambola?
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:01:14 AM »
To All My Tropical Fruit Extraordinaire/Expert,

Where can I find sour version of Averrhoa carambola, starfruit? My dad loves sour starfruit for Asian fish sour soup, but can't find it anywhere. I am wondering if any of y'all experts knows where to find it.

Thanks!

My Ziziphus mauritiana died on me. I wasn't home to find out, but I thought those were very hardy. Here in Qatar, they are growing wild everywhere.

A good mixture of Tengard SFR with surfactant works for me.  If you have to use chemical insecticide, buy commercial grade chemicals. I like Tengard and Nyguard (surfactant) because they work fast. Tempo SC and others are good for termites, cockroaches, etc., but they are slow killer. I like to see insects dying in front of me.

I am glad that Spaugh brought up this topic. I am also curious about grumichama, Barbados cherry, etc., growing in California. I will give them a try in a few months.

That's good to hear.  Thanks,  Behl!

yes, I am in Corona and we every year hit 32, havent lost much, however occasionaly you will lose a limb on young trees. key is on frost nights (there are 1 or 3 per year) water heavy, water keeps the temps up.

I have a question about growing mangoes in California. I am having my father in-law flying in from the Philippines to help me with the yard and tropical fruit trees while I am overseas. Can variety of mangoes like Valencia Pride stay the cold nights of Riverside uncovered? He possibly doesn't know what the hell he is doing over there. That's why I don't want to bother him over covering this tree, that tree. I just want him to do basis plant care only. Thanks.

‘No more agriculture in Puerto Rico,’ a farmer laments

YABUCOA, Puerto Rico — José A. Rivera, a farmer on the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, stood in the middle of his flattened plantain farm on Sunday and tried to tally how much Hurricane Maria had cost him. “How do you calculate everything?” Rivera said. For as far as he could see, every one of his 14,000 trees was down. Same for the yam and sweet-pepper crops. His neighbor, Luis A. Pinto Cruz, known to everyone here as “Piña,” figures he is out about $300,000 worth of crops.

That's a lot of bananas.

Hand pollination doesn't sound too good. I am thinking to plant a whole row of sapodillas. I already have 4 atemoya trees. I don't like the idea of having to hand pollinating them as well. Maybe having multiple tree might help. We shall see.
