Hand Pruner Preference
« on: May 28, 2015, 05:19:43 PM »
What type of hand pruners do you prefer?  For awhile I was using a cheap pair without a sheath which proved to be cumbersome, time waste, and dangerous.  I broke down and purchased some Bahco's w/Sheath (PX-M3) and haven't looked back.  Super comfortable and for everyday use they are amazing!  Once every few weeks I'll spray some oil and sharpen to keep them happy and functional.  My cutting capacity and the amount of work I accomplish because of one essential tool has far exceeded my expectations.  I do keep them razor sharp and use them to cut through anything.

I take them apart and use a lansky sharpening kit. The sharper the better.

How do you sharpen your Fiskers?

All around use I agree with Rob. Felco. The Italian Casterlari are the rolls Royce of hand pruners but expensive. AM lea it'd sells a generic hand pruner for under $30 that fit fellow blades. They are pretty good two

I use Felco #6 or 7 the one with rotating handle can prune long time without finger fatigue. Also use old Bahco's wife picked up at swap meet for $2- were all rusty and had clip & hold section on them which I took off, they work great us for pruning sucker growth away on trees. 8)

i have a pair of ars bypass pruners that i got through a group buy at my county extension office. i don't know how they compare from experience, but they were talked up as being one of the better ones. the website below does a good comparison:

I've tried a number of pruners and I've found Barnels are a league above most other pruners out there -- double locking mechanism and self oiling bolt makes them just more useful in everyday situations. I have the B8s and the needle nose ones and they're far better than Fiskars or others.

I purchased a pair of ARS HP-VS8R (rotating) for my father who hand prunes 20' Arecas almost daily.  He kept breaking the fiskers and coronas.  They are sharp and have held up incredibly well for almost a year of hard use.  Based on his experience I would think ARS is one of the best.
