Crazy question, are jaboticaba safe for dogs to eat?
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:39:32 PM »
I have 2 dogs and two jabo trees in my back yard not fruiting yet but I was wondering if the fruit is safe for dogs to eat as I know grapes are bad for them and cause kidney failure!
Thanks for your help as alwYs

My dogs eat them, and seem to know how to avoid the skin ....

Not sure if it's 100% safe, but they've never had a problem (80lb male and 12 lb female)

There was a Facebook video of a big rott eating them right off the tree.  Unfortunately, none of our tropical fruit are considered mainstream fruit so would probably not be included in the ASPCA's list of foods that are toxic to dogs.  https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/dog-behavior/foods-are-hazardous-dogs

I still catch my dog stealing fruit from the red Jaboticaba trees!

They look like a ball, so he instinctively wants to pick them off the tree.

I will get try to get a video of him eating the fruit...he's a real connoisseur

My dogs would not be safe if caught eating my jaboticaba.  ;)

Hello,
Based on the content of the fruit flesh "Jaboticaba contains significant levels of certain amino acids like tryptophan and lysine." (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0963996913003487), as well as high levels of tannin in the skin. While both tryptophan and lysine are not always bad, they could be dangerous when ingested in high amounts which is why you would want to regulate how much they eat. Tannin, on the other hand, can be dangerous as we know about tannic acid in acorns causing problems in dogs, luckily tannin tastes different to the flesh which is why dogs are able to avoid it but i am sure this is not always the case. The size of the dog and how much they consume should be considered.

*please note that this research was quick and only identified 3 potential causes for concern. there may be others
*also this fruit is named after the grape but is not related to it otherwise :)
