Citrus General Discussion / What is wrong with my page mandarin tree?
« on: January 14, 2019, 03:44:44 PM »
The tree has been in the ground for about 8 months. However, it has slowly yellowed more and more.

What do you think might be the problem?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is your absolute favorite guava variety?
« on: November 30, 2018, 04:04:02 PM »
I'm tryin to decide what guava tree I would like to plant.

I personally like sweet, creamy types of guava. I'm not much of a fan of crunchy or crispy types.

I am really into rare fruits, I have tons of exotic subtropical fruit trees planted in my yard, but I thought I'd look into interesting vegetables to grow.

Just like the rare fruits, I'm looking for things I dont find at the store that taste delicious.

Let me know!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When is this Chaffey Cherimoya ready to pick?
« on: November 26, 2018, 03:04:13 PM »
Does anyone know what the season is for Chaffey? As you can see, it's begun to change colors and I'm just waiting on picking it.

I went to Ong's Nursery and he was telling me they carry a new, improved version of African Pride. Is this true? Does anyone have information on this?

I only have space left for one atemoya tree. Which variety would you recommend? Ideally I would want something that produces pretty well, and tastes good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about Ice Cream Bean
« on: October 28, 2018, 02:58:16 PM »
- What are the best tasting varieties of Ice Cream Bean?

- I saw there is a dwarf variety called an "inga Vulpina". Does this variety taste as good as other varieties?

- Does anyone have experience trying to maintain the size of ice cream bean? Can seasonal pruning keep it under 20 feet while still fruiting?

So I have some spots in my yard selected for planting Garcinia trees.

However my trees are only a few months old right now. I will keep them in pots for the next couple of years in order for them to develop in protected conditions.

So, in the mean time, I have a few spots with nothing growing.

My question is:

What should I do to prepare my soil for the garcinia trees? Currently, my soil is on the alkaline side, and I need to get it more acidic. What would you all recommend? Should I plant anything to try and make deposits back into the soil? What crops?

Thank you

Trees like Luc's, chacha, and intermedia.

I would prefer buying a decent sized tree, as opposed to a seedling online.

112
I would like to buy several trees like the Luc's, chacha, and intermedia. No nurseries in the san diego/la area seem to carry anything like this.

What do I do?

What are some good garcinia options?

Do any of them handle some shade?

I am in zone 10a

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing pawpaw in Southern California
« on: October 17, 2018, 04:16:56 PM »
Hi everyone!

I've read that pawpaw requires more chilling hours than what is conventional offered in the San Diego climate.

Does anyone know of low-chill varieties/cultivars of pawpaw? I really really want to grow it here!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What does a pawpaw taste like?
« on: October 17, 2018, 12:38:01 AM »
i'm trying to figure out what to do with the last two spots in my yard. Pawpaws are one of the few fruits I havent planted.

So my question is: How does this fruit taste? How do you rank it compared to fruits like mango or citrus?

116
I have avocados, guava, dragonfruit, cherimoya, mango, longan, white, yellow, and mamey sapote, citrus, figs, persimmon, jaboticabas, surinam cherry, cherry of rio grande, grumichama, pomegranate, and peach.

I have two old trees that are declining and need to be replaced. These trees are located next to eachother. They get partially shaded during winter months by nearby trees, but get more sun during the summer months when the sun shifts directly overhead.

I was thinking of a jujube tree, but I dont know if I have enough sunlight for it. I was also considering carambola but I'm not super wowed by the fruit.

What are some other good options?

Thank you all!

I have never had properly ripened star fruit. I have only tried poor quality starfruit from the store, where the fruit was a very pale yellow with tinges of green. I was pretty unimpressed.

But I was wondering, a properly ripened starfruit will obviously taste much better. But where does starfruit rank in taste next to amazing fruits like peach, mango, cherimoya?

I'm curious what your opinions are of this fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is the Bowen Mango a good variety?
« on: September 24, 2018, 11:49:20 PM »
I have a friend interested in planting a mango tree. He lived in Australia for a few years and really enjoyed Bowen mangos. These appear to be common down under, so my question is:

How does this tree stack up to the possibilities of amazing varieties of mangos, especially in Southern California (Fallbrook)?

120
I've only ever had the autalfo mangos from the grocery store. I find they can taste pretty good.

Are varieties like sweet tart, lemon meringue, lemon zest, bolt, pina colada really that much better tasting?

Thank you for your thoughts!

I feel like those cavemen after they invented fire lol

But after all, I am a newb, so to be sure, these are successful takes right? :D

This is an Alphonso mango variety.

The edges seem to bedrying out of new growth. The leaf then becomes wavy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I graft a small mango seedling?
« on: August 09, 2018, 04:22:22 PM »
Right now is the time to be grafting mangos here in San Diego. One of my trees is a Manilla Seedlings, no more than 2 feet tall with a very thin trunk.

Should I graft onto this skinny tree? Ideally I would like to get this project taken care of, but is it smart for the health of the tree?
