Tropical Fruit Discussion / Least Invasive Roots?
« on: December 04, 2020, 06:58:13 PM »
What trees have the least invasive roots? Like an air layered jaboticaba maybe?

Google says it can take into the 20's. So why dont I ever hear of people growing it here? Does it not fruit? Does it taste bad?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How Good are Star Apples?
« on: November 08, 2020, 12:23:10 AM »
Where does a star apple rank among great fruits like mangos, cherimoyas, lychees, etc.?

I am looking at buying a lot of land that used to be an avocado orchard. There are many 50+ year old avocado trees.

Obviously an older tree is valuable, but is there any procedure anyone knows by which these trees might be sold or relocated instead of being destroyed? Would an existing avocado orchard desire them, or is the cost simply not worth it?

Anyone order from this website before? Anyone from California, where getting a decent mango seems impossible without growing it?

Seems like they are shipping indian mangos. But the website is very scarce and its hard to know much.

Now that I have my yard filled with establishing mangos, peaches, citrus, sapotes, loquats, avocados, and other trees that will need trimming soon, it got me thinking: do any of these woods work well for smoking/barbecuing?

It would seem like these widely-ranging flavored fruits might produce widely-ranging flavored smoke. Does anyone have experience trying this out? I had a batch of jerk chicken I was going to try grilling up over an open charcoal flame, but it got me thinking about the possible tropical woods that might accompany this tropical dish.

Luc's Garcinia planted in May 2019 from seed.

Largest pots are $30, medium are $25, small are $20

Garcinia Brasiliensis started in May 2019 from seed

$15 for these. I might have one or two I could sell for $10.

62
These were started about 1.5 years ago from Machete Ice Cream Bean seeds I got from Hawaii.

I'm selling the 5 gallon trees for $30/each.

Smaller size plants are $15.

The smallest ones are $10.

Thanks!  :)

I am thinking of planting 4 types of bananas (suggestions welcome) However I started thinking, why not have a plantain for some more cookable bananas.

However, I am seeing that some of these banana varieties are genetically part plantain? And that plantains seem to ripen like regular bananas and get soft and squishy? And why am I struggling to find plantain varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Watering Mangos in Southern California
« on: May 26, 2020, 01:05:06 AM »
My grafted Sweet Tart mango tree has set a nice bunch of fruitlets for the first time! As I am eager to try this mango, I really want to optimize my chances for success.

I have been reading that our dry climate allows us to not 'overwater' the mangos and 'wash out' their flavor etc.

What is the optimal amount of water? I believe Simon may have been saying that watering in winter can be an issue for root health.

Anyways, I'd love some direction on how to water mangos here for optimal fruit.

I bought a osntera deliciosa from home depot a year ago. Should I expect this thing to ever fruit or are there non-fruiting varieties of monstera?

Anyone have experience with this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to topwork Cherimoya tree.
« on: February 10, 2020, 01:30:14 AM »
I've decided to convert my cherimoya tree to a better variety (suggestions welcome).

The tree was put in the ground as a 5 gallon 2 years ago.

There are not many good vertical branches for grafting.

Should I stump the tree and graft onto a fresh shoot?

Looking for Imbe (Garcinia livingstonei) Seeds

$60 for the tree. I am in Carlsbad CA. I can't ship it so please pick up only. Im open to delivering in the San Diego area.

I bought this tree in April 2019 from Exotica in a 5 gallon. Repotting it, I noticed it was very root-bound from the air layering process. I delicately untangled and pruned the roots. The tree has responded and is now healthier than ever.

The black persian is a very Dwarf variety of mulberry. Exotica has multi-decade-old trees that barely reach 12 feet.

I got to try the fruit today and was very impressed. Makes me sad I won't be keeping this tree, but I just don't have room in the ground anymore.

A friend just moved into a barren yard on a beachfront property. I've heard that some fruit trees are salt intolerant and do no like the salt spray from the ocean.

What are some good choices for him?

Citrus General Discussion / Are Valencia Orange Trees Obsolete?
« on: July 19, 2019, 08:13:41 PM »
I have a valencia orange tree in my yard. It produces the least tasty fruit of my many citrus varieties, such as golden nugget, page, kishu, satsuma, cara cara, etc.

Is there something I am missing with the valencia orange? Does it have any special qualities that justify its existence in my yard?

Alternatively, I am going to chop it back and graft something new onto the tree. What would you suggest?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beetles pollinating my cherimoya flowers?
« on: June 20, 2019, 10:29:00 PM »

I was pollinating my cherimoya flowers and noticed little black beetles, and even smaller pale beetles fall into my container whenever I collect pollen.

Could these potentially be pollinating? I remember the issue of cherimoya in California lacking the natural pollinator found in South America.

Ive lost track of the number of people telling me they grow "apples and oranges" on their Southern California properties. Many of these people are sitting on acres and acres of land. They are self-proclaimed gardeners and describe their interest in planting out an orchard on their property. Yet when it comes time to choose the plants, they opt for the most common, ubiquitous fruits trees, like apples and oranges. Like many people have bragged to me about their lemon tree :/

So my question is, what is the reason for this lack of diversity? Do people simply not know these other fruits exist? Are they perceived as too much work? Is it an ethnic barrier?

I'd be very curious to hear forum members' thoughts and personal experiences with these pseudo-gardeners :P  (just poking fun a bit)

74
Has anyone had success growing miracle fruit in ground? The soil here is on the alkaline side.

75
I want to plant these in the ground. They are very specific of soil acidity right?

Do some work better as rootstock here?
