Title: Atemoya splitting
Post by: skhan on November 07, 2016, 08:55:01 AM
I've gotten fruit from this atemoya tree for the last two years.
It seems ever fruit opens and splits near the stem which wouldn't be problem except that by the time it ripens mold starts growing near and inside the opening.

The tree was sold to me as a Lisa, but its clearly not. The leaves on the tree aren't nearly as big as the leaves on the Gefner nearby, it also has less of a sub-acid content then the gefner i got this year.
This trees fruit is pretty firm and the skin comes of easy sort of like Na Dai sugar apple. I can't really let it get softer for the above reason.

The pink color is from the camera, the fruit has no pink what so ever.

Different picture from earlier this year

You can pick it before it gets to that stage and spray the stem end with a safe copper soap. That stem separation occurs when the fruit is ripening.

Thanks Simon

I was thinking about doing them but with neem oil (since thats what i have on hand) but i got lazy.
I dont have much luck with picking them so i usually just let them drop on the grass (they're in organza bags).
It seems like some of them get yellow even when not ready.

I'm having the same problem again this year.
Does anyone have any suggestion to keep them from splitting at least until they're ripe?

What other post harvest dips should i use to clean and keep the skin from browning.
Thanks

I have noticed my moya family loves consistent watering. If it goes dry and then gets super wet, it quickly ripens and splits.

What is your watering interval? Do you notice the problem after a heavy rain?

Its seems like as they are ripening they split open.
Wouldn't be that big of a deal but then mold seems to move in.

Maybe I'm picking them to late?

As for water, this tree just receives water as the rain gives it.
I dont notice any mass splitting after a sudden down poor.

Skhan, may I ask what kind of Atemoya variety is this?

It is a 'Lisa'.

You can pick them a little sooner.

I have heard claims that good Calcium nutrition reduces fruit splitting.  I would like to believe that that is true, but can't prove it.

Hi Har. Do you mind sharing a few tips for picking atemoya at the perfect stage for home consumption? Is there a huge difference between cultivar ripeness traits?

I dont mean to steal Har's thunder.  my experience is the fruit starts turning yellowish, and the pointing lobe are starting flatten out.

i read online to bag the atemoya fruit before it rains. the water gets into the fruit and causes the fruit to expand and split open.

Bagging won't stop splitting, but will usually catch the fruit when it drops.

Any other solutions to avoid splitting?

Try potassium.  I read somewhere that potassium can help.
