Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee grafted onto Longan?
« on: August 03, 2015, 08:09:06 AM »
If this inter-species graft doing on one main branch of longan...(other brach were still longan) then graft take success and doing well, givin a good vegetative growth....says 1-2 years (to make sure the compatibility is not an issue)....so we have a cocktail tree with longan rootstock...how the lychee part will response of Chlorate application...say it by soil drench method. so the lychee part get chlorate effect by its interaction with longan rootstock only. i mean this "magic bullet" Chorate very effective for inducing longan flowering in ultra tropical region as south part of SE Asia like Java. meanwhile application on lychee failed completely. just wondering how it will take on longan roostcok-cocktail lychee tree

I just want to share this information about Indonesian new mango variety.
It is result of almost 12 year breeding program. this mango released under name "Agri Gardina 45"
its parent was Harum Manis X Saigon.
Harum manis considering as one of indonesian best tasting mango but its green color seems become a problem when it comes to export.
Saigon is a variety introduce from India, and i think it is different than Saigon cultivar that few time mention in this forum.
overall the taste was resembling the Harum manis and the peel color is blushing red, but i think the size would be another problem.
But i found some interesting character about this mango...it dwarf and very early bearer...and its have some ability to induce flowering of the tree where its scion grafted on to...even juvenile rootstock can induced to flowering...i will try an experiment use it as interstock...lets see how it work to juvenile scion that grow from seed.

Ripe and unripe fruit, the fruit need to exposed to sunlight for the red color

prolific producer and dwarfing habitus

this is an approach grafting tree...the (juvenile) rootstock induced flowering at the time as the Agri Gardinas

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: American Mango in Indonesia

The first fruit pictured next to the Keitt and below may be Van Dyke. Sensation is another possibility. Neither typically exhibit a raised stem end like the fruit in the pictures though Van Dyke sometimes will.

The "zabecan" may be Kent though it appears on the bumpy side for a Kent. Another outside possibility is Manzanillo, a Mexican mango introduced to the US ( more common in Hawaii than Florida).

i also noted it raised stem were distinguish character...also little beak bellow.
or could it be Julie? i read PIN description about its strong pineapple flavor that match with this mango. for the rind color that deep red...maybe its because this mango grown in dry and full of sun area of East Java...

The Zillate looks correct, not Valencia Pride.   The big round mango could be Kent.  I cant say for sure that is a Mahachanok as there are other varieties with that shape.

The first pictures regarding the Keitt...the unknowns do not resemble any Keitt i have seen and would feel confident in saying it is not a Keitt.

Thankyou Rob....okay, i will labeled the part of grafted tree as Zillate, so the other branch wil be VP.

5
PJ that is becoming true with the 4 main cultivars but those in the pictures you post are getting too far away from the original to keep the name. The shape and flesh colour are not the same. Many here had to be reclassified and the real kradum, monthong, chanee and gaan yeow had to be identified.
The durian from Ricardo could also be luang or gumpun which taste a lot like monthong but don't have the beak.

Yes Mike, i totally agree with you. here people even called all cultivar that came from Thai as Durian Bangkok or Durian Monthong...despite the fact that those whom called under that name show very large variation (dozen or even more) in fruit shape, color and taste..and also leaves or tree habitus.

6
I think this is Monthong since the flesh was pale yelow and the rind is yelowish.
in other hand Chanee rind were more greenish and the flesh were yellow or even light orange.
But Chanee, Monthong or Kanyao is not a single cultivar, in Thailand it is a group of cultivar with variation among them

Some Indonesian growing Chanee (its called Durian Bawor or Kromo here)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / American Mango in Indonesia
« on: January 21, 2015, 01:38:23 AM »
Please help identifying this mango, i am pretty sure this is an american mango but don't know what cultivar it is

I bought this mango from local fruit vendor. it sell among Keitt...and the fruit seller said it was Keitt, but the taste and shape were different.
i notice the peel was very firm...but flesh inside was juicy and no fiber with strong aroma and pineapple flavor.

Compare to Keitt

Deep red rind coloration that expose to sunlight

Flesh inside

The second mango is the one that i graft on the tree, but the label was gone. the flavor and taste were milder. i graft only two scion so this is either Zillate or Valencia Pride?

Fruit develop

Mature but unripe fruit

Ripe fruit

Inside look

and the last one is two mango that my friend who grew them said that those are Florida variety.

The "Golden" and "Zabecan" mango

Im pretty sure this "Goden" is Mahachanok

The "Zabecan" were quite big...a kilos or maybe more
Does anyone know if there any mango called Golden and Zabecan?

Thank you for any respond
Warm Regards from East Java - Indonesia

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Super Mini Mango from Borneo
« on: December 30, 2014, 09:13:15 PM »
Friend of mine send some photo of really really small mango...or at least Mangifera sp...since i don't know what exactly the species is.
People in South Kalimantan (South Borneo) called it Kucilak or Cililitan. it skin and flesh color just like Kesturi (Casturi)...and when ripe...it really sweet. but my friend said its entirely different species. there is at least four or five "Wild Mango" that often sell at fruiting season and this Kucilak and Kesturi were two of them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Golden Queen Mango?
« on: November 27, 2014, 01:52:25 AM »
Here some pict of my Golden Queen mango from last season. its a 2 years old tree and plant in container

Its a heavy bearing flower and fruit...but since the tree were just too small...i decided to thin the fruit...at first i keep 3 of them but only 1 remain...i think the trees have its own mechanism :)

For the record...its yellow coloration was develop when it ripened properly after harvest. bagging with carbon paper would block the green color to develop, so when it comes to ripening process...the yellow will easily emerge.

It has a firm texture...no fiber...sweet mild almost without sour/acidity and some flavor of Keitt since it was one of the parent. it can be eaten raw green like it other parent...a thai cultivar.

Hi everyone,
Trying to googling red jackfruit in thai and this is what get :

http://www.kasetporpeang.com/forums/index.php?topic=90137.0

if the translation is correct its a 6 years old Dang Suria
im pretty sure it wasn't Photoshopped, the thread were some kind of Thai fruit lovers forum.
Maybe Bangkok can help us with this

13
and maybe you would googling some pict of "gowok" (Syzygium polycephalum) just for some comparison in fruit shape...

14
i dont think its burmese grape (and its relatives) .... burmese grape were common among indonesian...especially fellows from borneo. the special caharchters of these fruit is the fruits were resemble in cluster just like tampui or duku or langsat. in the other hand those mysterious black fruit were look like hanging alone on its twigs. the little "crown" like shape in the bottom of the fruit remind me of myrteceae....and those transculent flesh looks very similiar with jaboticaba or duwet (S. cumini)
how about the flowers? do you have any picture of them?

Andrew? The guy who thinks durian is horrible and thinks jackfruit tastes like onions? That guy needs a tongue transplant!  :o  Why trust him on anything? Bali salak is an awesome fruit. Very addicting. Absolutely no astringency.
cant be more agree....my wife and rest of my family, friends, neigbour and almost everyone i know here likes Salak Pondoh more than Salak Bali....but no one can change my mind....fully ripe, fresh and good Salak Bali is the best indonesian salak. but its for my personak palate....and im not taste any hybrids of those variety yet like Salak Mawar (bali x pondoh x sidempuan)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nangkadak (Jack X Chempedak) first harvest
« on: January 09, 2013, 03:51:44 PM »
Hi, just wanna share some pict of my Nangkadak. this is the first time its bear fruits. it size were pretty big considering this is first fruit and i keep lots of fruit instead thinning them down. the aroma were unique....just like jakfruit but kind of little "mild" with hint of chempedak aroma. flavor were excelent, very smoth with balance of sweet and acid. but for my taste buds...the texture were just more like chempedak (wich is to soft) instead of jackfruit that more "firm and crunchy"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Euhoria longana subsp. ?
« on: January 06, 2013, 03:25:38 PM »
i am very sure those pictures above is some of longan cultivar called "ping pong longan" (here in indonesia) it names refer to its huge size, sometimes were just simply sized as a ping pong ball. we belive that its irigins from vietnam and they called it Xuo Chom Fang or something like that. this longan variety was very unique since not like many other longan, this ping pong longan were extremly tropical. it doesn need any chill hour to induce flowering. just little drought and lot of sun shine....it will bear fruit, and its realy early bearing. they start to bear fruit at 3 years when grow from seed, and even grafted tree can be fruiting in 6 month!
in indonesia we known few cultivar of tropical longan : pingpong, white longan (both were huge and intoduce from vietnam) diamon river and chrystal (introduce from malaysia) and two local selection.
you can see the image if those longan by googling it in bahasa keyword : lengkeng pingpong, lengkeng aroma durian, lengkeng diamond river.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: LYCHEE GRAFTING ON ALUPAG OR LONGAN ?
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:23:16 PM »
Happy new year
Anyone has ever tried grafting Lychee on Alupag or longan?

Lychee and longan can be cross grafted. But that doesn't mean that it's easy. FYI lychee and longan can even be cross pollinated to form hybrid fruits.
I believe that alupag has been grafted onto longan, but not 100% on that one.

i have been trying to do this graft (lychee onto longan rootstock) but like many other said....its not easy at all. there is some growth on the scion but it is dying back right after first leaves try to emerge...
btw, is there realy any lychee or longan cultivar that is a cross bteween them? is that sweet cliff?

« on: October 04, 2012, 02:06:29 AM »
Some pict of Golek mango this season. i think it was most fiberless among indonesian mango, in fact there is no fiber at all. but the best quality with true flavor of this kind were need special soil and wheater condition...it best grow in dry/arid climate with sandy soil...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dwarf Jackfruit
« on: September 21, 2012, 12:26:59 AM »
This kind of jackfruit is tend to be a choise for limited space grower or even for growing in container/pot. it is not recomended for comercial orchard due its lack of aril/flesh recovery and small sized fruit. but for homegrown i think it just good enough considering tree size, productivity and quite good eating quality (flesh color yellow/deep yellow with crisp texture).
and Harry, yes it is a grafted tree like many otherplant material here. but this cultivar is an early bearing even when grow from seed. the tree would be 2 or 3 years old with 2 or three meter height before start to fruiting, good condition for sure.
and yes i think the fruit will got a toll to the tree and most of all, its hangin in the very small twig not in main brach, so i considering to cut the fruits off. i had saw small mini jackfruit dying after bear two huge fruit. maybe its better to grow the tree up, so it will take a better condition to bear good fruits

Dwarf jackfruit or mini jackfruit start to bearing fruit. it would not be a good crop considering the tree size, but it just nice to see it shown it early bearing and dwarf habitus...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Tropical Longan
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:01:13 PM »
Like i said above, it has a tropical character so it would not need chill or any other stessing technique (girdling/drought) to fruiting. but they were still dimocarpus longan for sure, it just a variation of it. with different flowering habbit and different fruit characters. like fruithunter said its very aromatic (when you put it in the room, it will fill it with pleasant sweet aroma/scent, taste and flavor were resemble some melon/cantaloupe flavor.
since it is a longan it can be easily grafted onto common longan tree. mine were grafted and it take just 6 month (from grafting process took place) to fruiting.
otherwise, you can grow this kind of longan by seed. and it just take approx 4 years (in good condition) to bear the first fruit. but like other longan, it will not true to type. but the variation would only in leaves shape abd size, flavor, fruit size and color. it will maintain it tropical charachters afterall.
in indonesia there is a native longan (well, they acctually came from china but it was long long time ago....hundred years maybe)
and like you said tabbydan, it taste and flavor were quite different from imported thai longan fruit or even with local growing thai cultivar fruit (edaw/biew kiew).
and yes, they were temperate trees, growing and bearing well at high altitude with low temperature region. you can see my longan of this type in my first post on this forum

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Tropical Longan
« on: September 19, 2012, 12:42:24 AM »
Here some pic of my white longan.
well, at least thats how fruit growers here called it, since there no one know what exactly cultivar its is.
my guess it would be some seedling of vietnam longan (long nhan in viet) and like major of vietnam longan, it is very tropic tree. there is no need of cool temperature to induce flowering. and it really early bearing, even if growing from seed. mine is a grafted and simply flowering when it first flush that emerged after graft process had mature leaves.

early april : side grafted scion start to grow

late may : second flush bring flower panicle along

mid september : almost mature fruit....white coloration start to appear

« on: September 18, 2012, 11:29:00 PM »
in east java, mango seasos will start two month ahead. but i got one (and only) off season fruit of harum manis mango.
not the best tasting, but pretty good considering it just fell of the tree and ripening process doin in the referigator! (my wife accidentally store it along with vegetables!) and just to remind me the best is yet to come. the long dry season we had now in java indicates that it would be a good crop this year.

the size and skin appearence, getting browning as it referigated

flesh inside were not much affected
