Passion fruit buds dropping off
« on: October 04, 2019, 01:03:37 PM »
I have a couple of passion fruit vines growing like crazy on a trellis (and all over the fence, nearby trees, ground, etc).  One is Frederick and the other is Possum Purple.  They have both been in the ground about a year and a half.  They were in big pots for a year or so before that.  They have beautiful gloss green leaves and grow like mad.  As buds start forming all over the vines, they start out green, but then turn yellow and drop (see pictures).  I dont fertilize them, trim them or water them.  They get sun about 8 hrs.

Might be it just too young to bear fruits. wait for next year.

One of the vines already put out 5 fruit about 6 months ago.  It put out about 15 flowers at that time.  Not sure why this time it's just not progressing once the buds form.

Was it really hot when it happened?  Seems like mine abort flowers above around 95 to 100F.

It's happening right now.  Maybe you are right about the heat.  It's been roughly 90F / 73F lately.

No every single flower will produce fruits. Also, if you want to increase productivity you must hand pollinate them.

Right now, they are all falling off before the buds even swell up.  So, no flowers at all.  Hundreds of buds starting to form, turning yellow within a few days and falling off.

they need lots of water for small buds to develop into big flower
the yellow bud shown in second picture is a prove of that

Try water... it is universally loved by plants... Especially fruiting plants.

Waste of time... Passionfruit is a weed! I get more fruit per day than anyone could handle.... Fredrick needs no hand pollination

Lucky, in El Cajon at least where ours grow, there are no carpenter bees and the natives just steal the pollen or nectar. Zero fruit without hand pollination,

My guess on the buds dropping off is too much/too little water, or too much fertilizer. I've seen it happen, but in the season that was described, they should be flowering.

make sure to shred the empty halves, or these little "bowls" (and avocado halves too)  will be full of mosquito larvae.
