Citrus General Discussion / Need help identifying this on my citrus tree.
« on: February 14, 2023, 04:04:00 PM »
Found about ten of them this am. They are some kind of pod or egg, and they were in a very sticky substance. These I found this afternoon. They are the same thing, just dried out a little.

After the late December 5 day cold snap, temperatures have been above normal. Four out of five of our trees are showing significant new growth. Only the satsuma is lagging, but it's late anyway. The Hamlin has even blossomed. Only hoping we can get through the next 5 weeks without a hard freeze. Not likely though. Winter rarely ends peacefully.

1. He says a Hamlin is a navel. I say it's not. He swears it is.🤔

2. He says his all his citrus (with fruit on) can withstand several nights of low 20s in a row, and not ruin the fruit. He shows a photo of a Hamlin tree after a cold snap, with major leaf drop, but with fruit still on. He said the fruit is fine. I just can't believe it. We just had 4 consecutive nights with temps 21-24 degrees. No way am I leaving fruit on unprotected trees.

Citrus General Discussion / Does this tree have citrus greening?
« on: December 28, 2022, 09:02:56 AM »
We have 5 trees, and they are doing ok except for this one. After reading the recent thread about greening, I noticed that tree looks a lot like this one. The rootstock is from a Halo orange, and we started it from seed 7 years ago up north, and brought it south with us in 2016. I grafted a Cara Cara, and a Honeybell to it about 5 years ago. It was doing great for 4 years. In the last year or so it started looking like this. Hope the photos are ok. I know there is some leaf miner damage, and recent freeze damage, and sun shadows. Please help.

Citrus General Discussion / Do Satsumas get better with age?
« on: December 04, 2022, 07:01:22 PM »
We have a young Owari Satsuma a few years old, and it has about 20 fruits this year. The juice is sweet, but they are hard to eat, and chew, and you have spit a chunk of pulp after every bite. Our neighbor has a mature Satsuma, and the fruit melts in your mouth, and is really sweet. Will ours improve with age? I hope so. Thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Last winter's cold affected my oranges.
« on: October 07, 2022, 12:04:08 PM »
We had two hard freezes last winter when the tree was blossoming. We protected as well as we could. Now I notice the oranges on our Hamlin tree are small, and alot are dropping. The only thing I can think of was the cold weather last winter. Is this possible?

I've read several posts on this forum, and it seems many people use this on citrus. Can it be used on in-ground trees? The instructions on the bag say basically one tablespoon per gallon of water. Just not sure if this is correct for citrus, and how often to use it, or how many gallons per tree. Any suggestions on how you use it are appreciated. I have 5 trees in-ground. One tree is 10' tall, two are 7' tall and 2 are 5' tall.  Thanks,  Ed

Citrus General Discussion / Triple Superphosphate question.

Is good to use Triple Superphosphate on citrus. I have a neighbor who said he has used it for years.

Citrus General Discussion / Crazy warm December is pushing new growth.
« on: December 28, 2021, 05:37:47 PM »
It has been unseasonably warm here in December. Lows in the 50s, and highs in the upper 70s. A couple of our trees are pushing new growth, and I even saw some tiny blossoms. Most of the fruit is on the tree still, and I haven't fertilized at all. Am sure we will have some winter in Jan and Feb.

Citrus General Discussion / Why is this tree yellow?
« on: November 10, 2021, 01:03:25 PM »
We have 5 citrus trees, all fairly young.  Four look good, but this one is apparently stressed a bit. It's a bit of a frankentree. We started a seed from a Cutie, and grafted honeybell, and red navel to it. The other four trees were purchased from a nursery.  It's about 4 years old, but this is the first time it has looked like this. There are other trees in the neighborhood that are a bit yellow too. Was hoping it would just clear up on it's own, but has been like this for months. Any help is appreciated.

Our 6 year old Hamlin orange tree looks like it's going to increase in size significantly.  There is new growth coming from almost every possible place.  It also is going to have probably a thousand blossoms. Last year was totally opposite. The only thing different was the winter. This year we had winter, and last year, not so much. I know lots of fruits need chill hours, but does something like that apply to citrus in Z9 ?  Does citrus need a cool period ?We have 4 other orange trees, and they are also growing like crazy.  It's very exciting to see this happening.

Citrus General Discussion / Need suggestion for lime tree for a container.
« on: February 25, 2021, 05:18:36 PM »
Live in Z9a in southeast Georgia.  Looking for a lime tree to grow in a pot. Something common that I might be able to pick up locally would be great, if possible.  Thanks,  Ed

Our orange trees are going to start pushing new growth in a few weeks. Is it ok to fertilize with fruit still on the tree?

Citrus General Discussion / Is there more than one Honeybell variety?
« on: December 20, 2020, 10:24:27 PM »
Our neighbor has a Honeybell tree, and all of his oranges were ripe and picked 3 weeks ago. Our Honeybell is just ripening now. Seems odd, so I was wondering if there was more than one variety.

Citrus General Discussion / Is this chlorosis? Can it be fixed?
« on: May 16, 2020, 02:37:01 PM »
We have five citrus trees in our backyard. All of them are fairly young, 6 years down to two years.  They are growing well for the most part, and we fertilize 3 times per year with citrustone, but I noticed this on the Cara Cara. Is it chlorosis? We live in southeast Georgia, and the soil is mostly sand. This is the dry season, and we water twice a week with tap water, which has a pH of 8.5+. Will a constant supply of alkaline water cause this, or is something else causing it?  Not sure how much the sand/soil buffers the watering. Rainy season starts in June. This is the worst affected, and I've seen a little on the others, but not too much. We had a soil test done 3 years ago and the pH was 4.6. Any suggestions for a cure are greatly appreciated. Thanks,  Ed

Citrus General Discussion / Our Hamlin tree 2 1/2 years later.
« on: September 03, 2019, 10:39:53 AM »
Just wanted to share how well it's doing.

Here in SE GA Z9a, Our young Ruby Red grapefruit had a late blossom last year, and set about 10 grapefruits. They are still small and green, and months away from being ripe. Normal fertilizing time, in-ground and foliar, is just around the corner. Can I fertilize normally with the fruit still on the tree?  Thanks,   Ed

Trying to gauge when to foliar feed our Hamlin orange tree.  We live in extreme SE Georgia, Camden County, Z9a. This is our third year with it, but forgot when it bloomed last year. Am guessing in early March, but not sure.  Thanks.  Ed

Citrus General Discussion / Is super phosphate good for citrus?
« on: November 28, 2018, 09:43:54 PM »
A local old timer told me to fertilize my orange trees with super phosphate in the winter after the fruit is gone, for a good citrus crop the following spring. Is there truth to that?

I know that the trees are fairly cold hardy, but there are about 15 oranges on our 4 year old tree, and they aren't quite ripe yet. Will they survive the first light freeze tonight??  Thanks,  Ed
