Is your white sapote grown  in a pot or in ground? I wanted to try one in a pot but have heard they get quite large.

Ataulfo  Popcorn mango picture.

Wow, never knew they had a small seedless one for sale too. Guess they are like the cuties Clementine market for kids over here in the states.

Did you see the tomato tree also? I thinks it's the regular looking kind of tomato of Italian origins and not the tropical tamarillo. I saw some youtube video,it looks spectacular but lacks taste in flavor says people that have grown it. Not the best video showing of the tree, but you get the idea.

Hey Rodney,
The Arizona purple I got from you, is it a slower grower than the rest. The rest I got from you have grown quite a bit(purple haze, physical graffiti, am beauty, Thai red and Phoenix red). The Az purple only has a stub of new growth of 1/2" while the rest mention has several inches of new growth. I will have the ashitaba maybe in 2-3 or so months, the seeds is going through a cold stratification for about 30 days. I have holy basil( I think they are a red or was it a mix color one?) now, if you would like some cuttings, not sure if they can grow from cuttings though or I can dig a plantling for you?

Maybe the ones i bought at Publix where not at prime for eating , could also be that they where in the cooler way to long at publix.
I will try them again, but from another location.

Ed..

Yup, give them another go, like I said try the ethnic stores or just let them get wrinkled skin and soft. Forgot to mention, that I've tried both the Mexican grown and Guatemalan grown ones and the latter is bit more tart/sour.

...just bought some at Costco today.  They are good, not great in my opinion.  Sometimes above average
other times lacking.  I buy them often from Costco in season.....

Gary

In my experience, Costco(including other big chain store, ethnic market is the way to go) doesn't carried them when they are best flavored. I like the ones I can get at the swap meet or the ethnic store when they are soft, a little wrinkled(my opinion) and over ripe. Super sweet and flavorful. Even better if you live in the Southern Cali area, they get shipped there the most ripe since it's closer to the Mexican border. But if you can't find any wrinkled one, just let it sit for a while. But I think I saw someone post on GW saying that the ones from Guatemala is kinda sour compare to the Mexican ones.

Nice variety you got there. If only we Cali people can just stop by any fruit stand and buy fresh exotic fruits would be a dream come true. But all is not lost, i've got an order of some mystery lychee coming next week from a member here, who sells lychee and mangoes. Then I also got some Mangoes coming from Mr. Berto Silva and he told me has some free gift as well in the package, so I can't wait to try some of those fresh tree ripen fruits and plus what's the surprise gift. I've always wanted to try growing some jack fruit( just for fun of course), since I know they will never fruit here. If you haven't discard the seeds, I would love to get some from you, I also emailed you so check your inbox.

There is a lady in central valley California that not only grows jackfruit but she grows it commercially and sells it in Bay Area. There was an article about her in Fruit Gardener magazine. So it's definitely possible! Can't remember what town she grows them in.

Now, that hypes me up. I want to try growing and fruiting one for sure now, Thanks Oscar! Maybe some kind Floridian will offer up some seeds soon ;)

I think I bought from the same seller (he is on ebay and has a website).

I received seeds after 1 month, totaly dried or roten. It is cheap and he sells large quantity, but it is no use, as the quality is not there.

Yup, i'm sure it's the same guy. Like you said an ebay seller and has a site. Lot's of seed variety in bulk at a steal, but seed quality is blah!  :) :( :'( >:(

karen,
I've gotten seed from India before and it took about 3 1/2 weeks to get here in the west coast. But could be anywhere from few weeks to a month or two. To bad my neem seeds from India, seems all dead. Been 4 months of waiting and still nothing so, I tossed them. Waste of time and money, but it was only $5 for 100 seeds, so i wasn't to disappointed. Maybe Roy will pack them better.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Is star fruit in season yet?
« on: May 31, 2013, 03:40:37 AM »
Thanks for giving your insight on your tree variety. I will take that into consideration when I'm deciding which one to get. Hopefully some other members pop in to give their opinion. I've read that star fruit is such a heavy bearer, that the limbs will sometime break. would you say Sri is self fertile or it probably got cross pollinate by neighboring trees?

I can say that Sri Kembangan is self-fertile; it may or may not be as self-fertile as others, but I've fruited it in my basement under lights with no possible access to any other carambola's pollen.  Research has shown that many Carambola trees produce much more if there's another variety available, so it wouldn't hurt to have another variety, but it is certainly possible to get fruit from a single Sri Kembangan.

   Kevin

Thanks Kevin, that helps in making some decisions. I guess it's like a blueberry plant that can fruit by it self, but with another to cross pollinate will set more fruits.

Hey Brad,
If you have seeds from your red Jabo, I would love some seeds if they aren't already spoken for? Or anyone else for that matter that might have some extras.

Thanks
Seng

Have posted this same issue before on a different site and didn't get any answers. So i'm going to resort to begging now :-[  I wanted to try fresh star fruit before I decide to buy a tree to grow. I've only tried store bought ones that weren't very good. I don't want to base my whole judgement on only one bad experience, so what i'm asking is, if any fellow members have a tree of good tasting fruits that have loads and loads of fruits that they can't eat all and can spare to send me some to try I would be most appreciative. If you have several different cultivar, you can send a few samples of each one would be great too. I'll pay postage. And if they aren't in season yet, I can wait for them if someone is willing to send me some. Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Recipes / Green papaya salad and green mango salad
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:24:00 PM »
Don't know what to do with unripe green papaya or mango, make green mango or papaya salad. Both are so good and goes well with lots of bbq meats or as I simply like it with sticky rice and pork rinds or cracklins, mmmm a complete meal for me for sure. Very refreshing and spicy but also very pungent. But don't let that fishy, fermented aroma scare you from trying this delicious southeast Asian dish. There are lot's of variation to this dish from different regions (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) try it and you'll be hook unless you can't get over that smell.

Gary-
that's nice that they gave nice baseball size fruits, but sucks that you lost them. In the near future, if mine doesn't come to the same fate as yours did, I can get you some cuttings if you want to try growing some again or even better an air layer or seedling. The strawberry and lemon guava are very hardy indeed and pest/disease free. They are very common around the west coast and often use as landscape trees/shrubs. They are also an invasive species in Hawaii(Oscar/fruitlover should know a thing or two about this)

618
Lucky you, new house and it comes with an already planted mango tree. Wish I could grow one here in the central valley in ground unprotected :'(

Tropicdude-
I think the crystal guava you mention is probably the crystal seedless guava we have here in the states.

Kay-
Sorry I don't know their traditional taiwanese names. I got them from that same site I linked in the first post. It only mentions that one is called emperor and the other is called hybrid pearl guava.

620
Thanks Herman, for that info. I do like crunchier guava that are not to sweet, so maybe I'll like these too.

621
Ya sorry, the green one, should of mention which one I was talking about.

Hi, i'm new here, but long time lurker and I mail order these two Taiwanese guavas? from a nursery down in southern Cali last year and was told they are varieties from Taiwan. They are still small, about a 1 1/2 years old and 1' tall cuttings. Does anyone know or grow these two varieties to know how the fruit quality is like ie. crunchy or soft, sweet or bland, etc. I don't know how to post pictures yet, but have the link from the nursery's site attached. They are the first and 3rd pictures on the top row(pearl and emperor guavas)

Maybe an aroemanis mango? Not sure if that's the correct spelling or name, but that's what it says on the site I got it from. But then it went on to describe the aroemanis? mango as being fiberless and based on the pictures it shows it does look fiberless. So yours probably is something else. Sorry can't be of more help.

As lychee season comes to a start over there in florida, is there any way I can get some of those fresh tree ripen Florida lychee shipped here into California? I wanted to get some from Erickson's farm but on the site it says no shipping to CA or HI :'( I really wanted to try some fresh ones and not those unripened Mexican Mauritius, we usually get over here.
