Banana ID help
« on: December 28, 2018, 07:20:25 AM »
My wife picked this up at Home Depot yesterday for $10. The label only says Musa Banana 3gal. Is this a dwarf Cavendish? Thanks for your help!

Most are usually just ornamental bananas producing inferior fruit.

Maybe in Denmark but this is most likely not the case in S FL.

You will need to wait until it fruits to get an ID though.

If the name of the nursery / source is on the plant, I've had good luck emailing or calling them and asking.  I've only done it a few times, but with 100% success.

Maybe in Denmark, but i have actually been in Home depot in Florida and other places (Looking at fruit plants) and there the sign said “Banana, ornemental. not for consumption”. That’s what i remember.

Hmm, well most common banana types in home depot here are goldfinger, dwarf cavendish, giant red ornamental, fake ice cream (namwah).

Im not an expert, it just wouldnt make a lot of sense for someone to propogate banana plants that dont make fruit in S FL.  Why would anyone grow it?

Yeah, that guy is in Seattle, so it’s irrelevant. Spaugh’s point, I believe, is that the most cold hearty bananas are typically ornamental only.

Many people in Florida would be happy to share banana pups with you. Ask around and offer to pay for some you will get them very cheap. I sell unpotted dug out sword sucker pups of Orinoco for $5. I found it to be unstoppable, reliable, tasty enough and a prolific producer of pups.
