Looks like my E. itaguahiensis plants are getting close to their first bloom.

They seem to grow faster than E. brasiliensis (common grumichama).

Hi Adam,

I would be very interested to know if E. itaguahiensis tastes the same as regular grumixama. Use all your might to make these flowers turn into fruits.

Tomas,

they're supposed to be blander than grumixama...but still a decent fruit...and the tree is much smaller....and it's also supposed to fruit sooner from seed...at only 2-3 yrs, instead of 3-4yrs.

I will be sure to let you know if I get some flowers/fruits this year

I could be wrong but I must have mixed my itaguahiensis with the reinwardtianas , they look so much alike , so i am not sure what I planted in the ground .

I have some itaguahensis here also. They haven't fruited yet, but will report when they do on their taste.

I do have one here that should be similar to a small grumixama... in fact the Brazilian name is "grumixama mirim"... scientific name is Eugenia blastantha

Mine has some 3 or 4 years but no flowers yet... do you have this one Luc?... it's supposed the be even rarer than E. itaguahiensis

Guess who will get some seeds if mine fruits anytime soon?!

Miguel , In the Lorenzi book the itaguahiensis is also called ' grumixama mirim '

Yes Luc... in "Brasilian Portuguese" the word "Mirim" usually means "something small" and is used for a lot of fruits.

That is why the Rollinia emarginata is known as "Araticum-Mirim"... and there are a lot of myrtaceae species with small fruits that are known as "Guamirim"...like the Eugenia florida for instance.

Here's my 2-year-old plant:

It is interesting to see how much more densely it seems to be growing under LED lights as compared to real sunlight. I still see no signs of flower buds, but it is only 2 years old...

I have one in the ground that I am sure is itaguahiensis , planted from seed in 2008 over 2 meters now , had one fruit last year , birds got it . Today I noticed something that looked like new flowerbuds ....will know soon enough.

I have about 5 E. itaguahiensis seedlings in 3 gal pots (quite root bound)... one has commenced blooming. It also happens to be the smallest tree of the bunch.

that was the only one I ever grafted! I need to make more! You might have the only one in the USA that's grafted!

i grafted it onto grumixama...it took, but hung on by a thread (not unusual for myrciarias or eugenias to do this when grafted)

it should heal up nicely.

I sold it because it was replaceable (although it was the first one I grafted)....i wouldn't sell the mother plants though! I was happy to sell it to you, because you're a zone pusher, and you came to visit from so far away!!

I should know in a week or two if we get fruit set. I tried blowing on the flower to simulate the wind...maybe it will help pollinate? $:-\$

lol, or maybe my breath introduced some bacteria that will rot the flower off?
