Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweet Tart Blossoms
« on: January 08, 2015, 07:11:09 PM »
After last nights cold spell the blossoms on my Fairchild, Pickering, and Cogshall look great.  The blossoms on the Sweet Tart however have folded over like cooked spaghetti.  Does this mean that dreams of eating my first Sweet Tart mangos are over?

A friend bought this mango with no tag.  The nursery that he bought it from got it from a nursery that was going out of business.  Anyone know what this is?

I would wait till early spring to plant.  You know that we will have a few cold days in Hillsborough County.    >:(. You might need to move them to provide protection from cold/frost.  Are the trees 3 gallon or larger?

Thanks Jeff!!!  If I can't find one I will let you know.  If it were summer & I had rootstock available...I would say yes today!  But if you do cut it let me know...I might just graft it to my Lancetilla.

For containers I have/recommend Maha, Pickering, Cogshall, Angie, and Fairchild.  My Glenn  isn't that vigorous either.  Coconut Cream seems to be manageable, but I have read that it is not a heavy producer.

Thanks Richard (sorry for the error).  I'm doing some planning so the advice is appreciated!  It looks like your trees are approx. 8' tall...is that correct?  I see that you are in ST. Pete...where do you get your mango trees from?

Zands - Very nice trees!  How far apart did you plant the NDM & Pickering?

My grandfather had a farm (tobacco, corn, soy beans, hay, livestock, etc.).  My grandfather would always have the best garden in the neighborhood.  People would come to him for everything from greens to watermelons.  I hated the work on the farm and in his personal garden, but loved the time with him.  I promised myself that once I left I was never weeding, planting, or growing anything ever! "That's what grocery stores are for."  I always use to wonder why my father & grandfather planted so much stuff.  Now I know that they couldn't help it, it's an addiction!  I kept that no grow promise for years, but growing too many things is in my blood.  :)

Zands - It was very root bound.  I go to this nursery often so I know
that they didn't have it long.  It had a PIN tag...maybe they sent all of the ugly ones up North to make space.  :) :). I upgraded from a 3 gallon to a 15 gallon.

PIN? I thought only Zill sold Sweet Tart? Your problem child will work out OK and you will be eating fruit from it in 2017...maybe 2016

PIN gets most of their mango trees from Zill as 1 gallons.

Good to know!  Hopefully they will send some Lemon Zest up this way next spring.

Search the site for "ultimate mango list".
Last time I looked seems like it required to join Google group (or whatever) to view it, used to be able to just view it.

DM

Thanks...I will look for it.

It had a PIN tag that just said mango and another tag that listed the name and description.  I called PIN a couple of days before I bought mine and they told me that they had just sold the last Sweet Tart and would not have anymore till spring.

I am thinking no sooner than 2017 for fruit  but I hope I'm wrong.
