I got my balcony citrus grafted on to poncirus. Not very happy about it though. Every year all leaves drop down.

Citrus General Discussion / changing leaf color over night
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:25:50 AM »
funny thing happened last week. I forgot to shut off water while watering one in ground lemon, which always had pale light green leafes. In 3 hours i realized what i have done and shut down the pipe.
Next morning the leafes turned dark green.  I war surprised to see such difference in color in just one night.

last january was first true test of my trees. Temperature in nearby Split dropped to record -7,2 C, which is second coldest ever and coldest since 1963 (-9). Lemons in Split and rest of Dalmatia suffered a lot. Most have never experienced such lows.  However oranges, grepfruits and tangerines mostly survived. I grow citrus on the island, which is warmer than the coast, so all of my trees survived including star ruby grafted on volkamer lemon, persian lime, feminelo lunario....

I planted tarocco grafted on citrange troyer few years ago. It proved to be good combination. Last year had 50 fruits. This winter survived -4 C with only small leaf loss. Also survived hot dry summer with minor damages, and i was not there to water it regularly. On the other side moro grafted on citrus aurantium did not do so well.

I have 2 nagamis planted in the ground and one on the balcony. All of them have one thing in common: they are slow growing citrus.
I love them anyway.

One of my oranges is grafted on citrange troyer. That one grows much faster than ones growing on poncirus and citrus aurantium.  Second fastest is star ruby, which is grafted on volkamer lemon.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Your most priced citrus fruit?

i do the same.
luak, just today I picked a lot of lemons, and juiced them.  Froze the juice in ice cube trays, and stored the cubes in the freezer.  My wife uses  them as needed throughout the year.

Just ate tarocco from my tree this morning. Only a bit red colour, but it tastes better than moro and navel.

Meyer contains less vitamin C than any other lemon. However, meyers are very fruitful. Once i got 70 kg from a single tree. Others like Feminelo lunario bear all the time, but i never find more than 20 fruits hanging on.

those are grapefruit photos in some nursery in Bosnia and Hercegovina, close to border with Croatia, but still some 30 km far from the coast with regular -10 C at least once a year. I was very surprised to see grapefruit growing there, because it is not citrus friendly enviroment. It seems only grapefruit and satsumas can grow outside in this place.

Thank you Millet for this text. I was just wandering what could happen to my balcony trees, after i forgot to close balcony enclosure last saturday. When I came back home at 6 in the morning the temperature on the balcony was -1,9. Probably nothing serious happened, because that temperature lasted couple of hours. So far i see no damage, but it is still to early to say.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Which Type Of Container To Use
« on: December 07, 2016, 08:55:01 AM »
I use terracotta for balcony trees. Being pretty fragile, one of them already broke. However i would never replace it with plastic. It looks better, and to me the most important, it absorbs excess water.

Sad to see people use someone,s bad luck.

I grow this sort too. There are few big sized fruits hanging on. I am really curious what will turn out of those fruits, considering that med coast is not its habitat.

Anyway, if the world heats up, then I might be able to plant a palm tree in my yard, and grow my citrus trees outside year around which would be nice. - Millet.

If only things were so simple! Actually a global warming is predicted to reduce the strength of the polar jet stream (because the reduced heat gradient from the pole to the equator, lowering the winds), making for polar cold fronts easier to reach southern latitudes. So a warmer earth apparently makes for a warmer AVERAGE temperatures, but also bigger spikes. Moreover, some place will become colder as result of the disruption of the termohaline circulation. This should last just few centuries, then probably people will be able to grow palms in greenland (if someone survives) with the new stable climate. :)

Regarding Italy, i have talked lately with a researcher of the Palermo university which complained that Italian citrus production has faced a long standing crisis and nowadays it is reduced practically to nothing. What i can say? I don't have any experience to say if he was a bit exaggerating or not. What i can tell you for sure is that in my summer travel in Sicily i have seen several abandoned citrus orchards, and finding good citrus, even in season has lately become a bit tricky (but maybe i'm just a bit snob when it comes to good fruits?)
In last few years in my city some people have started to plant some oranges tree and they seems to survive, while till few years before my place was too cold for oranges. I'm in process to graft some poncirus with some oranges to produce my own citrus orchard; so finally, even if i can't find any good cirtrus for sale, i will be able to grow my own!

I have been to Florence 2 months ago. I was surprised to see robustas palm in botanical garden. I guess they protect them during winter?
