It's about to get fun :)
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:52:08 PM »
Took a walk around the yard today, and a bunch of my mango trees are starting to push flower buds   ;D

I can't wait.  Khun See, Pim Saen Mun, and Nam Doc Mai are pushing big time, and those 3 have never fruited in my yard as of yet.

I also see some push on Alphonso, Cogshall, Rosigold, Fairchild, Carrie, Heidi, and Pickering.

I expect to see Heidi fruit this year, but as of now, no activity ..

Also no push yet on Glenn, Valencia Pride, Haden, Mallika, or Choc Anon.

My Alanpur Baneshan is very small, It was pugged to a 6 inch stump last winter, and is now in full bloom at 2 ft tall.

Too young and still dormant are PPK, Lemon Zest, Coconut Cream, Harvest Moon, Pina Colada, Langra Benarsi, Neelam, Cushman, and Hindi Bessenara.

Be careful!

Don't count chickens before they hatch!

Freezes can occur up until April although very rare (if I'm not mistaken, although I usually am).

It would be best if most of the mangos could wait until Late Feb or March to push flowers.

One good thing, is mango can have flowers burned off about 3 or more times, and still make flowers and fruit!

I hope you have so much fruit you have to thin it out! ;)

GOOD LUCK! :)

Yeah, for sure.  But it's been so warm, hard to believe it's still winter :)

I have fruit set already on my icecream and pickering mango!!! ??? ??? ???

We are out of whack!!! :o

It's a battle to keep watered, but not growing too fast, and trying to slow down metabolism of trees to save flowers that could be burned if grown at wrong time.

With annonas, especially, I find its easy to rot the roots if trying to push along through some freezes...

I'd like to know when SouthFlorida has had a freeze in April, or even March or February, for that matter.  Sounds VERY far-fetched (bordering on impossible) to me!

Down in our neck of the woods, where Sleepdoc and I live, I haven't seen a mango bloom scorching freeze in the time that I have been growing.....that would be since 1989.  Much more likely to happen is that the blooms open and because of the temps being too cold, the pollen isn't active.  I forget the horticultural science as to why this happens, but I was taught that temps below 60F will severely limit, if not totally prevent, mango pollination.  In the last two years, when I had temps at my house below freezing on several occasions, I have seen no bloom loss with temps as low as 28F albeit for a relatively short period of time.

JOhnb51,

I think u right, if it happened ever it was before 1800's because I can't find record of a hard freeze in March or April, even in Central FL for last 80yrs.

But I think the Full moon that comes around the second week in Feb, is the last chance to really have a hard freeze!!!

That's what my old friend told me tonight at least, been growing in Central FL for over 40yrs.

Thanks for correction! I thought I may be to paranoid! ??? :( ??? :(

My mangoes are still asleep but I've the beginning of lychee blooms forming on my Sweetheart and Kaimana plus blooms on the dwarf ambarella in the GH.  So it is about to get fun here too. :)

Nice! I have green knobs developing on my coconut cream(slow development) and my carrie mango. My NDM #4 has recent new growth and a couple of other branch-tips are developing green knobs. Hopefully, those would be flowers and that there won't be any more cold spells.

Now that's tough to say :).  I suppose the 27-1 and the Hindi Bessenara.  The 27-1 from reputation, and the Hindi Bessenara to confirm or refute my previous experience...

If we all get Lemon Zests this summer I think we should all meet up at somewhere (Harry's) and have a LZ taste comparison to see if the fruit remains consistent in different growing conditions. Are you in?

Make sure to keep us updated on the new mango development.

Does anybody have any VERIFIED bloom spikes on their CocoCream and/or LZ ?

Alexi - not sure what you mean when you say "knobs".  To me, from the description I put in my head, I would say those are new growth buds and not flower buds.  But again, that is just the image I see in my head from your use of words.

I think the correct term I should've used for the "knobs" are "terminal buds".  Hope this cleared up my message.  :)
