Best time of year to graft Cherimoya in Southern Califonia
« on: December 10, 2020, 03:34:17 AM »
I have 3 Cherimoya trees and only one of them has fruits that I like. I would like to graft the other 2.

Can you please tell me when is the best time of the year to do it?

People often graft when they go dormant around April

Here in San Diego our trees go dormant around March/April as RodneyS mentioned. It's a short dormancy of only a month. Once the trees begin to emerge from that period you'll notice the sap flow increase and the bark start to slip. That is the ideal time to graft.

Thank you!

Do you have any grafting techniques that work best with Cherimoya?

I've had high success rates with a modified rind bark graft. Here is an example of it being performed on figs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EcZ7zELzyI

I will doing the same to a couple of my trees. In order to have some good branches to graft on to...What month/time would be good to prune back heavily down to the stump?

Alangr008, I recommend when the tree goes into dormancy and begins to drop it's leaves. That will vary depending on your climate, but in SD it's usually March/April. Cherimoya respond well to aggressive pruning during dormancy.
