Kaz, I had planted a seedling of 'Blk. Magic' but it died in ground for unknown reason :(

27
Kaz, your yellow 'Dennis' sounds interesting for sure might have to try and get cutting sometime to graft onto flavicarpa or another passiflora.
Mike, I know Australians have developed many hybrids of edulis that are sweeter than what is in USA and the real good ones never leave your Country. To bad for us because would be nice to try some of those varieties in the States :(

Also Kaz, you mentioned 'black magic' did you get that one from Hoang? He sent me one one time and I thought that it was one of the sweetest p. edulis I ever tasted. Like you said I don't like p. decaisneana but do like a sweet/tart taste in passion fruit. I have a 'Possum Purple' that a friend gave me and the first fruit I got off that vine was very sweet to my taste. I do like my 'Fredricks' in my smoothies though so, search goes on for the very good passiflora edulis or hybrid of with good sweet tart flavor.

28
This one is yellow and large, fruit tastes excellent.

Kaz, you have nice big p. flavicarpa there and you say excellent taste but brixs are only 8 so, no to sweet right?

29
passiflora popenovii are notorious for being hard to sprout from seed unless you can get fresh seed. Most seed out there are to old to have good percentage to sprout for sure with p. popenovii.

30
sounds like a good one Mike, except we don't get some of those excellent passiflora varieties up in the States :(

I have always but a round fence material around my new seedlings or new grafted tree with shade cloth all around and on top for first year, then open shade cloth up to morning sun and take top shade cloth off for second year.  Third year open to full sun my trees are growing fine with no problems. My climate is coastal influence inland about 3-miles as crow fly's.

It's a young tree give it a chance to grow more before it will fruit. I would put in ground they don't like pot culture.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Young Cherimoya: to defoliate in February?
« on: February 16, 2024, 12:07:17 PM »
many, many years ago when i used to go to Orange  county CRFG scion exchange to get scion wood for avocados and cherimoya, I used to take my young seedling cherimoyas in the G.H. and defoliate them about two weeks before scion exchange then they would be ready to graft when I came home with cherimoya scion wood. New buds are right under current leaf petioles.

My surinam cherry trees are about 8'-10' tall and all self seed from dropped fruit, I'm on ancient sand dune soil with 40 yrs of mulch and horse poop they are like weeds under my Chamba variety.

I agree will Bill, most likely was a bud graft and that's on the right side with different bark than r.s. I had same problem with some paw paw's I bought small grafted trees that had two trunks and they to were budded low on r.s. grew into branch I don't know why they (Nursery) don't cut back or some how label correct branch that is variety you bought!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When to prune mulberry?
« on: February 02, 2024, 01:06:02 PM »
Best to prune Mulberry when dormant before they start to push sap flow, mulberry's can bleed badly from cuts made at other times when sap is flowing. You can summer prune to help with tree height and help manage size. Some varieties bleed more than others so, it's snip and learn kind of thing if you still want to prune.

Now mulberry, olive, pomegranate, white sapote, Loquat, can be cut (pruned back hard) and will regrow with no problems but will loose fruit for next one-two years ( for folks with over grown tree's).

Kaz, that's a beautiful fruit for sure 8)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Persian Mulberry Fruits - in SoCal
« on: January 29, 2024, 07:09:14 PM »
Hi all, does this look like a persian mulberry?  Photos from last april/may, and the fruit was very delicious, great combination of sweet and tart.

There's another tree in the yard that has an even smaller fruit, and the little bobbles on it are larger and have little fronds sticking out from them, but they were rather sour.  There were a number of what I think are pakistani mulberries, 3-6" long fruit, pretty sweet but virtually no tartness.

Thank you for looking.

I've had a persian mulberry for about 38 yrs. bought from nursery that grafted them on fruitless mulberry about 5' off the ground, I love the Black Persian mulberry I think it is one of the most intense flavor mulberrys that are out there also, Noir de Spain is very close to flavor. And No, strom that does not look like a Persian mulberry look at fruit pic that Kaz,
=sc4001992 posted that is what they look like sections ( what ever they are called) of fruit are very plump not tight like your fruit.

Carolyn, you planted a seed from a tree with special meaning to you and a friend but really as you know seed can come true to type or most likely be a hybrid because you don't know where the bee or insect was before pollenating said tree. You can name it what ever you wish. 8)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passion Fruit germination tips?
« on: January 25, 2024, 12:22:47 PM »
Soak seeds overnight first of all then their are different methods people us such as; soak in G.A-3 250-500ppm overnight, soak over night in strong tea and finally soak in juice of passion fruit overnight to break down seed coat. Also I have sanded outside of seed coat to help soak mix get into seed embryo.

Pecan Pie variety came from Papaya Tree Nursery originally and the story is that David Silber who started nursery got into Lucuma and contacted a professor of Ag in Peru and he sent David scion wood of many varieties to try out in Ca. I think "Pecan Pie' was one of the better varieties that he propagated. Another person who introduced Lucuma to Ca. was Alfredo Chiri a member of Orange County Chapter CRFG.

No, the fruit sets in mid year to fall then following Jan-March fruit ripens and falls when ripe but fruit is still good keeps shape most of the time. So, really only takes about a year overall to set and ripen.
Sweet!

I think they hang on the tree for 2 calendar years which might explain the minimal fruiting
