Ok, will feed with my organic fruit fertilizer.  Thanks for that everything.

Thanks also for the encouragement.
Recovery is a Wonderful thing.
Haven't seen a tree do this, but your encouragement gives me hope.

Will feed, cull and wait.  We've prayed for this tree many times.

This is another pic of part of the tree.
Will take the full starfruit tree tomorrow

I did talk to the county agent.
He said to have the soil tested.
I just find this hard to believe since this was such a
prolific tree until this summer.

Interesting you should ask about the Fertilizer.  In the spring I put Whitney Farms Organic Planting Soil on the top around the Starfruit tree.

Beginning of the decline.

I have always used Organic Alfalfa on my yard, etc. so using this product which contained Alfalfa was an easy choice.
Costco carried this product plus another Miracle Grow soil.
At this point I didn't realize what was happening to the tree.
Later, still thinking this was good soil, I tried to find more, but Costco didn't have any stock.

I began reading reviews people had left about the soil and found really scathing reviews.  Some said
there were rubber pieces along with metal and other trash when they opened the bag.  Hope many
read this so they will not use this product.

I am posting a picture of the trunk which doesn't look right.  I have lost trees before by adding too much mulch
around the trunk.  Over a month ago I pulled back soil from the trunk, but have seen no change.  At
least the tree is not dead.  If I can add more pics, I will.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Carol

I will post pictures later today.

There are no bugs on this tree.
Also will try to contact my county agent.

A once prolific producing Kari Starfruit tree is declining losing
limbs and leaves.
Fruit is about 2" long when fruit was 6 inches
Tips of branches dying.
Thanks everyone, Carol

We have had a Starfruit tree for over 5 years.  Was producing many, many fruits.
The last 2/3 months the small branches have been dying at the tips and the leaves
are turning yellow and falling.
Also the fruit is so small maybe 1 1/2 inches.
I don't know what is wrong with our tree.

If anyone has had similar problems or could help us with these symptoms, please respond.

I could buy a new tree, but I'm afraid to put the new tree in the same soil.

Thanks in advance, Carol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado Issues - MEXICOLA GRANDE
« on: April 14, 2019, 12:13:18 PM »
To anyone interested in the Problem that was with this Avocado.  I had no posts or help with this issue and wanted to post what
a nursery in Galveston said about this.
It is Black Sooty Mold which is not threatening to my avocado tree.  The person who helped me with this issue was highly
knowledgeable.  She asked me if I could rub the black off.  I check the tree rubbing with my finger then my nail and the
black did come off.  What a Great help this was.  She said to treat with Neem during the early evening.  I then asked if
I could treat or rub the black off with alcohol.  She said "Yes", but if that didn't work to use Neem.

I will treat with alcohol rubbing to see if I can remove all the black - then rinse thoroughly with water.

I did want to post to help others on this forum who have always been so helpful to me.  Thank you everyone.  Issue Settled !

Hope this helps to ID the issue with this avocado tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Issues - MEXICOLA GRANDE
« on: April 11, 2019, 05:08:28 PM »
Hi, I am trying to get some help with my potted Mexicola Grande Avocado.  I potted it with a type of
lava rock.  It has been out in the sun with the temp rising to 92 for 2 days now.  Suddenly I noticed
the black on the main stem.
I don't know if it is fungus or the sun or what is the issue or too much watering.
I also have a Pancho Avocado potted in the same way right next to the Mexicola.

I moved the Mexicola into mostly shade, but I am asking for help with this issue.

I saw that someone put hydrogen peroxide into their watering mixture and their avocado
recovered.  Also maybe I need to remove the mulch on top.

Thanks in advance for any help.  Carol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Air Layering - What Age Tree ?

Thanks to all of you.  I was concerned about this process killing a younger tree.  I just bought some coconut coir
soilless to begin working on this.  It is rather an interesting and hopefully fruitful process.  Carol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air Layering - What Age Tree ?
« on: January 25, 2019, 11:09:22 PM »
I have been studying air layering and haven't tried yet.  My main question is "What age tree can you Air Layer".
I have a wax apple that I would like to try, but it is only 3 or 4 years old.  There are 3 3 ft long branches only.
What would happen to this tree if it were too young.
Also, a Longan tree that I bought at a nursery and have had for 2 years.  It is maybe 4 ft tall.

Is there a rule of thumb for air layering.  Thanks !!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Joey Avocado in the Freeze
« on: February 21, 2018, 11:15:05 PM »
Hoping someone as good advice on maybe saving this tree.  Rather pitiful looking now since the
temps went down to 20 around 3 weeks ago.
It has only been in the ground around 2 1/2 months.
We put pipe insulation around the trunk around 20" up then covered with
heavy material.
This Joey may be able to take cold temps, but maybe not as an newly planted tree.

Also, I was watching a video on cold hardy avocados.  Someone posted that there were really no cold
hardy avocados - that vendors were just trying to sell them.

Is there anything to be done to help this tree recover.
Thanks in advance, Carol in Houston

I was looking at your list.  We are in Houston which was zone 9, but someone changed the zone to 8.
We just experienced a hard freeze 20 degrees with ice/sleet.  We spent the entire day from morning
til dark covering fruit trees.
The main tree I wanted to comment on was the Cherry of the Rio Grande.  Ours is about 5 years old.
This tree took the temperature with no damage.  Even a baby Rio I planted is coming back out.
We covered the Kari Starfruit, but we always cover this tropical tree.  We also had Christmas lights on
lots of trees.
This is the second Barbados Cherry I have lost.  If I get another, I'll leave it in a pot.  We definitely know what will
make it and what will not.  We have dug up the persian lime, a lemon, and one other that will seem to
never be able to fruit.
The older Jacotabica has lost all its leaves, but is still green on the stem.  The cara cara orange faired the worst
of all the citrus.
I am going to post here hoping someone many know help for the newly planted Joey avocado.

Hope this never happens to you or I again.
Wishing you well with your trees.  Carol in Houston

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help with ants at the base of my mango tree
« on: December 31, 2016, 06:48:01 PM »
I can't say  how dried molasses works, but it does.
I have been reading how sugar will kill insects - maybe that is why it works.  We buy the 40-50 lb bag.
I know of 2 places in Houston,
Southwest Fertilizer and Quality Feed and Garden on N. Main.  I am sure there are more, but these are the 2
I know.  I would try a feed store.
I was taught this in a class.  It is also wonderful for our gardens and yard.  Just don't use the liquid molasses
as it will ruin your sprayer.

If you want to get rid of ants in your yard, apply dried molasses.  We throw it
around at least once a year.  Dried Molasses is great for your yard and gardent.
However many applications, it works.  I haven't
had an ant in my yard in years.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Yacon review

My Yacon all died in the heat of the summer here in Houston.  Wish someone would post their successful growing
methods.  I would like to try again.
I bought mine at Rareseeds.com.  They had an excellent sale late in the season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: December Keitt Mango in Los Angeles?
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:15:31 PM »
HI, I live in Houston with what looks like similar temps in La to where I live.  Maybe we get colder.
It has been slightly warm this winter, but I picked a yellow mango last week and another is turning yellow.
There are 4 or 5 more green mangoes on this 4 ft by 4 ft tree.  I just believe they will all get yellow due
to the full sun.  I know I could pick them green to ripen on the counter, but I do want the best tasting mangoes.
I think we are learning all the time how to take care of all of our fruit.

I am so glad your mango survived.

I have a dirt space of 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 Ft circling my tree with nothing but mulch in it.  I have fed with some
compost and am now expecting the 3 mangoes treea I have to just take off next summer.  Just praying for NO

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kari Star Fruit - Chambola
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:01:42 PM »
:)I would like to get some information on my Kari Star Fruit.  I would like another of the same variety.  Instead of buying another Kari, I would like to know if I could drape one of the branches down into a pot.  Would this root another Kari Star Fruit.  The mother Kari is a grafted variety.
I am guessing that this technique could apply to any fruit that is grafted.  Isn't this called layering ?

Thanks in advance for all the knowledge !!

That is a good idea - I'll take off the diseased leaves.  I was reading that worm castings sprayed on the tree is anti-fungal.  Also someone
suggested immunox which I may have.
I wouldn't have thought of stripping the leaves.  Great idea,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Disease on my Apple Tree
« on: February 06, 2016, 12:13:02 AM »
I am asking how to treat this issue with my Apple Tree.  Some of the leaves are Yellow with black spots.
I was going to plant a Jujube tree near this apple, but now I am thinking it may not be a good idea.
Thanks Carol
