Durian from Thailand, please help to identify
« on: January 18, 2015, 09:55:46 PM »
Hello All,

One friend mine, engineer agronomic, went to Thailand last october , he tasted some fruits that were in the season,
For him, the best fruit he has tasted was Longkong, the second best was a durian
He dont know what type or specie of Durian that he has tasted, but he said the durian dont have strong smell, only a normal smell,  and the texture seems sweet butter, detail, he never had tasted a durian before
Also he said that had long queues to eat this Durian,
He brought 5 seeds, 4 are germinated , and he gave me a seedling
Can someone help me to identify which is the specie or cultivar is this Durian

Longkong also one of my favorite Thai fruits. Hard to tell what kind of durian that is from the photos. If i had to guess i would say Chanee.

The durian could be chanee or monthong but is not any of the other major cultivars.

i guessed Chanee because Monthong has more pointed tip at the bottom of fruits.

When fully ripe will have strong smell. But eaten outdoors you won't notice it very much.

I think this is Monthong since the flesh was pale yelow and the rind is yelowish.
in other hand Chanee rind were more greenish and the flesh were yellow or even light orange.
But Chanee, Monthong or Kanyao is not a single cultivar, in Thailand it is a group of cultivar with variation among them

Some Indonesian growing Chanee (its called Durian Bawor or Kromo here)

PJ that is becoming true with the 4 main cultivars but those in the pictures you post are getting too far away from the original to keep the name. The shape and flesh colour are not the same. Many here had to be reclassified and the real kradum, monthong, chanee and gaan yeow had to be identified.
The durian from Ricardo could also be luang or gumpun which taste a lot like monthong but don't have the beak.

Yes Mike, i totally agree with you. here people even called all cultivar that came from Thai as Durian Bangkok or Durian Monthong...despite the fact that those whom called under that name show very large variation (dozen or even more) in fruit shape, color and taste..and also leaves or tree habitus.
