Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees I gave up on
« on: March 18, 2024, 09:43:32 AM »
Don and Katie Chafin of Going Bananas had those longans 20 years ago

This is an interesting topic lol.  There's been a few trees where I just completely gave up on.

Around 20 years ago I got 2 longan airlayer varieties from Florida at a time where usually u could only find Kohala here.  It was Sri Champoo and Edaw. It was directly from the man that first brought it from Thailand and introduce it to Florida. For the life of me, I can't remember his name but if anyone knows, let me know.  In all, that time I was never able to get a single ripe fruit from them, blooms profusely, but barely held fruit and when it did the fruit never quite ripen. To this day, I still don't know why as I hear other had successes in California. Well I topworked both trees about 4 years ago. I get fruit from those top work now, ahah.

Another was ilama. Maybe 15 years ago i obtained some seeds.  Babied the few seedlings that I got. Got 1 to live. Grafted that seedling branch onto my cherimoya. Took a few years but it flower. It was a pain to pollinate as it didn't accept any other Anona pollens.  When I did get fruit, it tasted like a sweet potato to me. But kept waiting for it to get better or maybe I thought I did something wrong.  Gave up on it a couple years ago and topworked the branch. I just leave it at just bad luck and poor variety ahah.

Yeah same here with Nam doc Mai unfortunately had to trim them off to trim these trees down so I bite the bullet this year. Fralan I'm going to top work it always make  more than one crop and not enough pounds and just to fast growing.Unfortunately where i planted some mango the soil is to rich and causes rampant growth not good for mango!Cookiemonster had same issue.

You should just graft on to Tice mulberry it has rootknot resistance. That's what i did Pakistani  then it grew massive.  :  )

Found the first mango of the season "Fralan" .That tree makes more than one crop for me so not to unusual. For me those trees are to vigorous so I'm top working.People been asking me what I'm doing i have been trimming the whole grove since hurricane Ian 1000 trees.Chopping up the debris with 3000lb forestry flail.
How is Pine Island recovering, in general?

We are making good progress  :  )

Nice pic =new hope for the year  :  )

I did some of my vines by grafting but it did not seem to improve performance. If you can find some citron melon, Citrullus caffer they may be good rootstock experiment at the time i could not get the seed. It grows wild on the old sands of the citrus ridge if anyone has some seed i would like to try it.

I would be happy to supply you with citron seeds the next time I come accross a ripe one. There are some in a grove that I drive by every day. I'll have to check on them.

That would be awesome!

If you need something or funds let me know.
John

I use Steinernema Feltiae for Nematodes they also wipe out fire ants ,grubs, cutworms you can find the bodies of those insects laying paralyzed on the ground in a day or so.Work best when applied to  moist ground even watered in some @ dusk to avoid UV light
